the idea wasnt that far fetched because they booked Will Ferrell for the final show....who as you know, was the very first guest. so PJ showing up wasnt as redic as you are suggesting

I think he was saying that the Tonight Show would have announced PJ, as they are a big band.
...but, with things as crazy as they have been on their show with it ending very suddenly, I wouldn't be surprised if they worked out something special and last minute, whether with PJ or another band, or maybe not at all.

My mistake...it would be cool to see PJ on TV again tho. I hope Neil rocks the place...I like most all of his stuff, but for the occasion, I hope he plays his up tempo stuff and not all ballads.
