I need some suggestions for some really good metal. I'm not talking just about Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Pantera; I'd like to know more about some of the less mainstream metal bands out there.

I've been getting really into High on Fire, The Sword, Mastodon, Down, and Machine Head. Any other suggestions? Feel free to discuss your favorite metal bands.
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
Butthead: Huh huh.

I'm not a big metal fan but I love Symphony X. I've seen them a couple of times and they're an incredibly tight band. The Odyssey is probably my favorite album.
  • I cannot recommend anything more highly than DevilDrivers new album Pray for Villains. It kicks so much arse.

Shadows Fall are another one you might be keen to look into, they had an awesome album with retribution, and as far as a live act is concerned the singer has dreads to his feet. What more can i say :) (I dunno how much metal you've listened to you've probably already seen both)

Also, bands like between the buried and me, behemoth and black dahlia murder are pretty good, depends what your tastes are like though.

what does 'metal' even mean...

You say The Sword is metal? (actually stoner rock)

Some people say Cannibal Corpse is metal...

Guess you wanna be checkin out Mastodon.

I'm a big fan of early PRONG like this number...*Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck*

Their first couple albums I thought were great....Beg To Differ, Prove You Wrong, Rude Awakening

    Peace
*We CAN bomb the World to pieces, but we CAN'T bomb it into PEACE*...Michael Franti

*MUSIC IS the expression of EMOTION.....and that POLITICS IS merely the DECOY of PERCEPTION*
    .....song_Music & Politics....Michael Franti

*The scientists of today think deeply instead of clearly. One must be sane to think clearly, but one can think deeply and be quite INSANE*....Nikola Tesla(a man who shaped our world of electricity with his futuristic inventions)

  • i also agree with the mastodon suggestion. They are probably the most acclaimed and important metal band of the last 5 years or so

    Baroness - Blue Record
    Mastodon - Leviathan
    Clutch - Blast Tyrant
    ISIS - Panopticon

Really digging Stonesour right now. Been listening to the latest album from 06 called Come Whatever May but re-listened to the debut album from 02 and it reminded me how good this band is. The lead singer and guitarist are from Slipknot.

not sure if it is metal in a classic sense, but i got a new album last week by a british band called Gallows. they are pretty hardcore, kind of a punk metal band if you know what i mean. the've got some great guitar riffs and their singer has one of the most gnarly voices i have heard in a long long time. they have a song called death voices that is getting heavy airplay on sirius satellite radio so i bought the album. its called "grey brittain"...its definitely worth checking out....i know it definitely helps keep me going when i run on the treadmill and need some motivation lol...

here is a link to death voices...

Dunno if you'd call it metal or whatever, but Deftones is imho one of the best bands around. I have listened crap out of their first two albums as well as White Pony.
  • Like other people are saying, some of these aren't strictly metal but I'm not sure how else I'd categorize em.. Some bands I like:

Tomahawk - Mike Patton project (with the Jesus Lizard guitarist), so you know they're a bit loco.
Storm Troopers of Death - Anthrax spinoff. A bit old, but filthy and awesome.
Moistboyz - Dean Ween (going by Mickey Moist) at his shredding best. Also very non-politically correct.
Sepultura and Soulfly - Kind of a gimme, but no one else has mentioned them.
The Mondo Generator - Nick Oliveri (the screamy one) from QOSTA.
Infectious Grooves - Suicidal Tendencies gone funk. Yes yes yes.
Suicidal Tendencies - Them too. More hardcore punk, but whatever. Tomato, tomahto...

(...I guess these ^^^ have all been around a while but they fuckin ROCK.)

    Some newish stuff worth mentioning:

    Lamb of God
    Five Finger Death Punch
Dir En Grey (Japanese metal, they opened for Deftones and sounded good)
    Trivium

Well i like every band you mentioned so you are off to a good start. Plus this year The Sword and High on Fire are putting out new albums. (high on fire out on feb 23 first single up on myspace kills it)

    Baroness-
I would recommend the blue record but many folks like the red album better. Both are quality. The Red Album has some of their best songs (rays of pinion, the birthing, Isak) but i think the blue record is better all around.

    Mastodon-
These guys are top notch. All of their albums are good for different reasons-
Remission- a bit harsher and heavier
    Leviathan-their masterpiece
Blood Mountain- i know i called leviathan their masterpiece but i probably like blood mountain more on 51% of the days. A little easier to get into i think
Crack The Skye- More prog oriented vocals much easier for non metal fans to get down with The Last Baron, and The Czar are epic fucking songs.
You owe it to yourself to check out their song blood and thunder it is their most popular song

    Opeth-
These guys are technical prog death metal or some shit like that. They mix soft and heavy parts very well. My fav by them is BlackwaterPark.

    Amon Amarth-
Fucking Viking metal. Some cookie monster vocals but not too harsh. I’m very fond of their album Fate of Norns. Lots of riffs here that chug along.

Nile-More on the Death Metal side of life. Very technical and very talented. I have in their darkened shrines and I like it a bunch. I have also heard annihilation of the wicked is very good

I’m not much for black metal but I’ve heard some songs by Emperor and Immortal I thought was okay. Also a newer band Wolves in the Throne room was interesting.

Another band you might like a lot is Lamb of God. To me they are easy on the ears if you like Pantera.

There is a lot of good stuff out there I hope some of this helps. I would defiantly take the time to check out Baroness and Mastodon based on your taste

oh one more thing I did not mean to dismiss Baroness' heavier roots their ep's simply titled First and Second are very good. Just a bit heavier kind of like how mastodon's remission is heavier then their other stuff.

Red Sky is a killer song by them worth seeking out. Relapse re released them as a combined album last year making it easier to get your hands on them.

Oh an you have listened to Kyuss before right? If not their album "Welcome to Sky Valley" is sooooo good. Very stoner rock

Metal is funny... although I'm not sure if that is the intent. Is their anything more high-larious than a musician trying to act tough?
