It is a good debate isn't it?

Stop the cruises from going there and the country loses $. Also they are delivering extra supplies. I'm torn.

I don't know... it's not like the Royal Carribean donated its services to deliver supplies.... it is on a scheduled cruise, with tourists on board. Those tourists aren't going to spend a dime onshore... most will probably never leave the ship... would you? I wouldn't.
I think it was more of a scheduling issue and Royal Carribean is using the 'humanitarian' defense. It's not like there are no other ports in the Carribean Sea to dock for the onboard vacationers... unless those docks are occupied. I don't know.
Anyway you look at it... it's bad press for the company... a luxury cruise ship (that are noted to be floating gluttonyfests) stopping in a place where the dead are loaded into dumpsters with skip loaders and hundreds of thousands haven't had anything to eat for days.

Yes , exactly.....I see that the cruise ships are bringing money into the region and also delivering
    much needed supplies.

    ...
    The difference is...
The media is reporting to the rest of the world what is happening there via words and images...
The Royal Caribbean is bringing tourists.

The cruise ships are nowhere near the disaster. Where they stop is on a nice beach, by a nice lil' town which was not hit by the quake.

c'mon, dramatic much? you are acting like the ship is pulling into a town where bodies are lined up... If the people on the ship were told that they were in the DR, they wouldn't know the difference, no one is "being entertained at others misery".

I'm still resting on my dangerously speculative, based on nothing other than conjecture view that it was a scheduling problem. The ship was scheduled to dock as Port Au Prince and there may have been no other ports with docking and/or hotel accomodations available. And to cancel the cruise would have meant a refund to all of the tourists. I am purely guessing that the execs at Royal Caribbean Cruise lines figured, it would be fiscally sound to make the trip to avoid the loss, not taking into consideration the bad press they might (and have) received.
But, seriously... what do I know?

You are kidding right? Not everyone just eats on a cruise ship, and it's an affordable vacation for many.

Having been to this destination more then once with Royal Caribbean they own this Island you can read all about it HERE. Pretty much everybody will get off the boat as this destination because 1 you are right at the beach and don't have to pay a cab fair or some rip excursion to get their. 2 they don't have a normal lunch that day there is a huge BBQ style lunch provided on the island ( which always makes me poo...HARD) Here you can use your on-board CC card thing to buy drinks things and all the employees are local to that area so they definitively wanted to work. SO yeah I see NOTHING wrong with this at all.

Articles like this are why I hate everybody!

I did find it funny when I went to RC site the first thing that came up in a big Flash banner was this thing about Humanitarian Aide for Haiti and link HERE

One thing that is a bit misleading is that since RC owns the beach they avoid many of the fees that come along with docking ships in a port.... that is why cruise companies started buying beaches and whole islands and shit, they keep more of the money for themselves that way.

there is an interesting documentary thing that comes on CNBC or MSNBC or something like that which talks about the cruise industry and how their fiances work...very interesting, they went out with a ship and calculated all the money that went in and went out and once it returned it barely broke even

    right.

who are we to suspend a vacation in the face of tens of thousands of deaths. not even suspend the vacation, take fucking detour, the island is going through something right now.

The ship goes to a "resort" that was created by the ship company. Its fake. They could be anywhere on earth for all they know. Its a fake area made just for them.
I did hear that some people cancelled their trip. They said things like, "they can't enjoy a meal there while others are dying nearby", "they just can't enjoy themselves".
I say bravo to those people. Of course the ship comany sent stuff as aid along with them. They'd be lots more outrage if they hadn't.
    Save room for dessert!
