So much for last show at the Spectrum...

The Spectrum's last show was Pearl Jam on Oct. 31.

Right?

Not quite.

Comcast-Spectacor chairman Ed Snider staged one last blow-out Saturday night with a spectacular cocktail party that filled the floor of the doomed arena. Ice sculptures, some bearing raw bars laden with jumbo shrimp, crab claws, and oysters, dotted the room, which was draped off from the seating area by white fabric.

The guest roster was a mix of sports alums and front-office folks, power players (Steve Cozen, Ron Rubin, Bart Blatstein), and broadcasters (Al Morganti, Keith Jones, Steve Coates, Ron Burke, Michael Barkann) -- some of whom, like concert promoter Larry Magid, were even around when The House That Ed Built opened in September 1967. Hence, the rare bottle of 1967 Château Lafite Rothschild that was cracked open.

A spotlight shined on a full-size ice sculpture of singer Kate Smith as Flyers alums Bernie Parent and Bob Clarke carried the Stanley Cup (on loan from the Penguins) and led a line of about 10 Broad Street Bullies teammates to greet Snider. Queen's "We Are the Champions" played. Jerry Blavat spun records during the breaks.

After Snider's welcoming remarks -- and a duet of "God Bless America" featuring a recorded Smith with a live Lauren Hart -- he pointed to a curtain. It opened to reveal the evening's headliner: Earth, Wind and Fire, whose second set was followed by a performance by Elvis interpreter Johnny Seaton.

(There's the answer to the trivia question: "What was the last musical act to perform at the Spectrum?")

Snider's children presented their father with the framed blueprints of the building, bearing an Ayn Rand quote, and staff suprised him with a tribute video set to Bruce Springsteen's "The Wrecking Ball."

The building will come down in the spring to make way for an entertainment complex called Philly Live.

Because it doesn't it wasn't a real show it was a private event hosted by Snider, were tickets sold for this "show"? No. All this means is that PJ wasn't last on the stage but the last concert at the Spectrum remains October 31st 2009. It's definitely not an FU to the band.

Seriously? You are getting worked up about the owner of the building and both teams that played in it having a private party for family and friends with musical entertainment? Not to mention this was a huge project for him over 40 years ago and his pride and joy.
  • I actually go see Earth Wind and Fire every year with my mom, its her favorite group and they put on a hell of a show. So in that respect Im OK with them being the last group to play there.

On the other hand i love PJ so i agree this is bullshit

Pearl jam was the last band to play the spectrum in my mind.... the last to rock the holy hell out of it anyways :)
  • I agree, this does not count as a "Concert". This was a performance for an Ed Snider party. There were other events like hockey and basketball games played by local radio contest winners, I don't think the 76ers and Flyers are pissed about that. I can still say that Pearl Jam was the last concert at the Spectrum and I was there! :D

I heard a janitor hummed a Beatles song as he cleaned up the stage after the private event so technically he was the last to perform @ the spectrum.

  • The reason the boots aren't out yet is they're making a dvd from the shows and they're probably going to release it as a set.
Thank you for sharing this journey.

Did anybody tape that or shot some footage of the janitor humming? And to what Beatles tune? That footage would rank in a lot of dough on eBay!
