Buying Ten (back in the day).....

  • I think I bought mine at Caldor, too! I'm trying to remember if that was the cheesy K Mart equivalent in the Lincoln Mall, Rhode Island, 1992. I was 18. It was about the fourth CD I had ever purchased, since CDs were newfangled technology back then! All my 1992 CDs came with a lovely paperboard longbox. Remember those?!?

  • I was 19 when PJ came onto the scene...my brother's girlfirend worked for a radio station in San Francisco and she sent me a cassette of a gig from PJ's first European tour...I subsequently received comp tickets to see them at First Avenue in Minneapolis...I picked up the TEN disc at the show after they played...they spray painted a stickman on the backstage/loading door on the side of the club at some point...idiots at First Avenue have since painted over it! I loved walking past that club and seeing the stickman, courtesy of Ed from their first Minneapolis gig....I cannot see myself ever feeling like that again (in regards to music) but I am so grateful to have been witness to it...fucking sweeeeet time to be alive....

  • I can't remember that far back. But it was a cassette and it was about 1992 (I was 10). I got it because my friend's older brother had it and we thought it was like the coolest thing ever. A 10 year old listening to Jeremy, Alive, Even Flow, and Why Go for the first time opened my heart and mind to things I never thought were possible at the time.

Flip Side Records(Palatine, IL) on Cassette
heard evenflow and was blown away by the coolness of the sound(after first listen Deep and Once were my favorites as I was a total metal head...but Release had some power over me I just loved.. To be honest Jeremy, & Alive were maybe my least favorite tracks. I do recall loving Black and Garden first time as well. I did not become a FREAK until I saw them Live in 94...then it was all PJ all the time for almost 3 straight years

    I didn't get Ten until University in 1998 . . . .

Vitalogy was the first PJ album I bought . . . . I then got No Code & Yield when they came out and it wasn't until after the Barrie show in '98 that I was prompted to finally buy Ten and Vs. Got them both used while in University in the fall of '98 (I was 20) from a table in the University Centre that was selling used CD's.

Never hearing anything but the singles.

not sure of the store but bought it at the same time as Nevermind (at that time equally loved Nevermind and Ten, until Vs. came out and blew Nirvana away)
not one particular song, loved Jeremy video, Alive and Evenflow all over the radio as well.

    4. Used a gift certificate from Christmas to get 'Nevermind'. There was a balance on the certificate, so I wanted to pick up something else. The store clerk recommended 'Ten', saying, 'If you like Nirvana, you'll probably like these guys'. Tossed in the balance and walked out with the two CDs.
'Ten' got little or no play because my CD player was spinning 'Nevermind' and Nirvana on an endless loop for a couple of years. I thought Pearl Jam was more like Bon Jovi.
It wasn't til 1993, when I first saw them live (on a free ticket) that things changed.

    4. I'd never heard of PJ, but my "cool" older neighbor told me I would like it. Turns out, he was right. I bought my first two CD's that day; Ten and Core (STP). Ten didn't leave my CD player for about two months.

    - Bought the cassette from "The House of Sight and Sound" in Salina, KS (The place still exits - http://www.houseofsightandsound.com/)
    - I bought it because my best friend brought his copy over to my house for a listen a week or so before. I loved everything about it.

Side note: that same kid that introduced me to Pearl Jam traveled to Chicago this past April and we went to our first ever PJ show together on 8/23/2009.

    5. Probably Alive, but Even Flow and Jeremy already were in heavy rotation at that point too and the Jeremy video was the best I'd seen in my life.

obviously. I still buy all my music on a physical copy unless it's not available as such. I meant (but didn't specify-my bad) the AGE of downloading. Not just d/l'ing itself, but myspace, legal full album streaming, all that jazz. It's actually pretty difficult to avoid hearing something before it's released. That's all I meant.
