My Pearl Jam Story....

edited January 2010 in The Porch
I am a Grade 5 Teacher at an inner city school in Toronto. (and a huge PJ fan) :D
Recently I thought I would share some of PJ's music with my students, (most of my students would never have heard of them otherwise...very much a hip hop dominated culture in our area). I have taught the Elderly Woman, and Wishlist (I play guitar and they sing). Their response has been increadible, I have heard them singing the songs on the playground and on the basketball court etc. We are going to perform these songs at our upcoming concert in a few months. Recently my students have been participating in a competition to write extra lines to wishlist....these lines (which i was worried about) have been overwhelming...some have been able to keep the same tone as eddie.....It is amazing how their music transcends!!!
I am thinking about posting their extra verse once we vote on it (just for fun)!
Just thought I would share!

Love to hear of new young people getting into PJ but equally love to hear music being transformed in a way that makes it refreshing to hear. There was a cd by a bunch of school kids called The Langley Schools Music Project doing accapella covers of 60's stuff like Pink Floyd and The Beach Boys which was really quite good. Teachers need to use their freedom to teach each generation about the music that went before them. I constanly hear my kids singing bits of PJ and loads of my other music and it's satisfying that they're being subliminally brainwashed by their dad because I hate when kids only listen to what MTV ram down their throats. I grew up with Led Zep,The Beatles and Deep Purple and I still love it today.

That's awesome - keep it going. Teachers have the the ability to make such an impact in a persons life. Good job.

I suggest that you teach them Just Breathe...great song

Glad you could connect in such a meaningful way. Keep up with the good work!!!
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of
arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to
slide in sideways, BBQ sandwich in one hand, cold beer in the other,
body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "Woo Hoo what a
    ride"!

That's awesome! I love hearing stuff like that. I gave my son (6yrs old) a mp3 player for xmas...and loaded it full of tunes that he hears regularly. Its so cool to over hear him singing to himself songs that makes dad proud!
