Has anyone ever read this book? I just finished it and it is astonishing. Completely opens my mind up about religion. I highly suggest this book to anyone who wants a quick, enjoyable, and highly inspirational read.

So (SPOILER WARNING) if you have read it, how do you interpret it?
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
Butthead: Huh huh.

Read it a while back, but to be honest I can't remember how I interpreted it. I have a terrible memory. I remember I enjoyed it and found it a little sad. Maybe I should read it again

I focused more on the words then the metaphorical meaning. I just remember how I could almost taste the meal Martel described that Pi remembered. Also, just looking at it as a story, it is a very interesting story. The writer clues us in on how Pi garnered these survival skills before he had to use them, and it makes a good story - first the stem grows with learning the survival skills, and then the blossom blooms when Pi uses the survival skills. It was a quick read.

I've been wanting to read this one again. I liked it a lot when I read it to years ago, but i think I'd get more out of it now that I am older.

I read it and I HATED it...same with a couple of friends...we were all left going, "Huh?" Everyone RAVES about this book, but we all thought it certainly did not live up to the hype. Sorry, Oprah - you missed on this one...

  • I read it for a Myth & Symbol class two years ago, which really added to my appreciation of it. I loved the book all on its own but looking at it from a certain perspective made it that much more powerful for me. I got to hear Martel speak in Ottawa last year and he's a really incredible person, very humble and witty.

Also, if you want an entirely different take on religion, try Christopher Moore's "Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal". I'm an athiest and I couldn't believe how choked up I was at the end. Everyone knows how the Jesus story ends! This one truly resonated with me because Moore really made an amazing effort at making the characters extremely easy to identify with. The bond between "Josh" and Biff was very touching and there was such an overwhelming feeling of catharsis towards the end. Plus, it's got Jesus doing Tai Chi with a yeti and tons of inappropriate humor!

i read the book a while ago ... loved it ...

for me - the book simply throws out the possibilities and lets the reader decide ... it really is what religion is all about ... faith ... and that it should be up to us as individuals to choose what we want to believe in ...
