I didn't see a thread about this yet. Billy's posting free downloads of every song of his entire new album. The first one - "A Song for a Son" could have fit along nicely in Melon Collie. I'm really hopeful he's returning back to the sound that so many of us fell in love with on his first three albums.

The next song is due in a couple of weeks, I'm really interested to see how this project unfolds, for good or for worse.

I'm kind of done with SP. Unless they come out with something that just knocks my socks off I'll stay away from any more albums by them because the last few have been awful .

I hope so too. Love those early albums. Zeigist was just him masterbating on the guitar.

Meh, I was hoping he released another song already when I saw this thread. I mean, it has been about a month.
    Thanks EPOTTSIII!

  • When SP first announced that program where they would offer a 'new' song for downloads on their website, didn't they say it would be one song every 3-4 weeks? Seems like "Song For a Son" was made available at least 6 weeks ago??? I hate to bitch about the slow rate of getting freebies, but this is looking like another one of those things that starts out sounding great then fizzles out into a 'puddle full of detriment'.
Wrigley Field (Chicago) 7/19/13, Pacific Coliseum (Vancouver) 9/25/11, ScottTrade Center (St. Louis) 5/4/10, Sprint Center (KC) 5/3/10, Wachovia Spectrum Arena (Philadelphia) - 10/31/09, Key Arena (Seattle) - 9/22/09, Key Arena (Seattle) - 9/21/09, United Center (Chicago) - 8/24/09, United Center (Chicago) - 8/23/09, Colonial Center (Columbia, SC) - 6/16/08, The Vic Theatre (Chicago) - 8/02/07, Pepsi Center (Denver) - 7/02/06

Actually come to think of it, I just might be a puddle full of detriment.
  • Supposedly the next song will be available on Monday.

Woot! I hope so. A Song for a Song was a lot better than I expected, so I'm getting pumped for this. Hopefully the next song will be a cool fuzz-rocker like early SP, which hopefully isn't too much to ask for, as Billy said he's trying to get back to their early sound.
    Thanks EPOTTSIII!

  • I have a feeling that besides the length of the record, the songs them selves are going to be very epic-y sounding

You can listen to the new song "Widow Wake My Mind" on their Myspace page. Strangely, it isn't on their official website yet.

    EDIT: http://smashingpumpkins.com.s3.amazonaw ... y-Mind.mp3
Found the link on a hunch, by replacing the DL like for "A Song for A Son" with the name of the new song. It baffles me that it actually worked!

haha, nice find. now we just need to guess the rest of the song titles and we'll have the whole record.

digging the new song too, but not quite as much as i did with ASFAS immediately...

I don't mind it. But is it me or are these guys really bad a producing? The drums sound even worse than they did on a song for a son. Really thin, you can barely hear them! At least his vocals sound better than on ASFAS. Either way not a bad song, just not great

I think you can chalk that up to the drummer. He's only 18 or 19, so he's probably not too experienced in recording drums. Plus, he just has a different style than Chamberlain, so that might be factoring into it, too.

On the song itself, it's not as good as ASFAS. The "oh, oh, oh, oh" bits are really cheap, and the lyrics are uninspired. I'm kind of disappointed.

  • yeah, that 2nd song doesnt sound very good. The drums sound messy/uneven or something. Blah, considering I thought Song for a Son was decent. I wonder how it will be after say 10 or so songs, might be a mix of some gems and duds, or could get better. Time will tell....

I've listened a few times. The song is pretty bad. The drums though are unforgiveable. I don't blame the new guy at all. Billy brought him in. They're all over the place and the timing sounds off. On top of that the drums production is atrocious. I thought it was bad on ASFAS, but this is just terrible. Billy has been around the music industry for 20 years now, he should know how to produce an instrument apart from his own. Hopefully the next song will be a step up from this. Disappointing

    It's a pretty sweet Zwan b-side...

But I trust Billy has more up his sleeve. I agree with all the production comments though, good lord. How about we have a bit of a whip-round, maybe if we all chip in a little bit each we can get Flood, Alan Moulder or Butch Vig back on board.

Glimpses in his vocals in this remind me of Zwan!
  • I'm sorry, but I think Billy Corgan has just lost 'it'. Whatever it was that used to inspire him seems to be gone. And let's be fair, this is not the Smashing Pumpkins, he's the only original member, and now there is nobody to help rein in his huge ego. Sad.

It would be a stretch to call this even Zwan, let alone SP.

    Exactly.

I'm also fed up with bands coming out with this bull-shit that the album format is dead. What made records like Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie so good, was how perfectly all the songs flowed together. I would take ten brilliant Pumpkins songs over 44 average songs any day. That's the problem with Billy Corgan, when he's good, he's amazing, and when he's bad he's fucking awful. Unfortuantely, he doesn't seem to be able to distinguish the two.
  • I likd the new Songs Billy had written just before Jimmy left so I hope I will like his new stuff!

It's going from bad to worse, in my opinion. I wish Billy Corgan would just call it a solo project and get over it.
