Hey, I have been a Pearl Jam fan since day 1, and like all of you have all there records. I have studied now to see what is the greatest record the band have given us- its taken a long time. I have listened and listened. for 18 years. So here goes with a mark out of 10.0 9th place to 1st.

9th- PEARL JAM 7.92 RELEASED: 2006
8th- VITALOGY 8.00 RELEASED:1994
7th- RIOT ACT 8.06 RELEASED:2002
6th- YIELD 8.15 RELEASED:1998
5th- BINAURAL 8.15 RELEASED:2000
4th- BACKSPACER 8.72 RELEASED:2009
3rd- NO CODE 8.76 RELEASED:1996
2nd- VS 9.00 RELEASED:1993
1st- TEN 9.36 RELEASED:1991

*please note that Binaural beats Yield because it has more songs with a 10 rating. Also interesting to note, that if you take the 3 ''songs'' out of Vitalogy- Heyfoxymama... , Pry,to and Ave Davanita than this record would jump to an 8.36 score giving it a 5th place rather than 8th.

I concur with these ratings with only one exception, Vitalogy. Even with the three experimentals I would put it somewhere between Binaural and No Code. Dunno how official this list is or what each song rates, but would like to see more.

  • Some interesting replies to my list:
As always lists will throw up all kind of debates.
Each song was given a rating out of 10. Then all songs are then divided by the number of songs on the record. So 10 songs with a rating of 10 are going to get 10.0. The ratings were done with many PJ fans, through lyrics, likeability and also how the songs stand the test of time. I hear that Vitalogy has got some queries for being low down. But the survey's feedback did not rate Not For You, Tremor Christ, and Bugs with being PJ classics- this is what ultimately gave Vitalogy a lower ranking. As for Yield. The following songs only yielded a 7 mark: the instrumental before MFC and Push me Pull me. Genearlly the records had to have a few 10's and a good number of 8's to qualify higher. More feedback is apprecaited. Thanks for looking. And have a great day.

Is it ok to say that I OFFICIALLY disagree? :D

“Put yer good money on the sunrise”

  • LOL, I disagree too :D

Vitalogy has to be near the top :) Otherwise, I don't think this is accurate (no offense) :)
Makes me ache, makes me shake...
...is it so wrong to think that love can keep us safe?
  • For the last time Vitalogy would have been near the top had it not included the 3 bizarre instrumenatls- how many of you really listen to heyfoxymama. And please be honest with your answers.

I would rather have 10 great Vitalogy tracks and some filler than 14 mediocre Riot Act songs with 0 filler.

I'm not too far off of this rating, except I would have eliminated Mop, Pry and Aye - since really, they're not songs to me... I may have switched Riot with ST too. But you have a very intriguing list here.
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you. :)

    indeed.

  • My "Official List" as determined by ME:
    9. Riot Act (Ok record, but not up to PJ standards)
    8. Vitalogy (too much bullshit, would have been better shorter like backspcer)
    7. No Code (solid album but others are better)
    6. Pearl Jam (great follow up to a poor riot act)
    5. Backspacer (phenomenal...no filler)
    4. Binaural (this record has grown on me so much over the years)
    3. Yield (deep, well written, great songs, great sound, what's not to love?)
    2. Ten (legendary, anthemic, one of the best debut albums in history)
    1. Vs. (A perfect record first note to last)

As a band they really haven't made a bad album...if i made this list again tommorrow it might be different, but the top 3 would stay the same

This should really be a Top 5, then everything else joint 6th as there are no bad PJ albums:

    9. Vs. (By no means a bad album but, apart from Indifference, I get more out of the others)
    8. Riot Act
    7. Binaural (mostly great songs but the production is shocking)
    6. Backspacer (I love it already and it will probably get higher on the list over time)
    5. No Code
    4. Pearl Jam (one of the best albums of the 2000s)
    3. Ten (the best debut album of the last 30 years)
    2. Vitalogy (A work of genius, including Pry To, Aye & Foxy - no more 'filler' than Wasted Reprise or Red Dot)
    1. Yield (Perfect in every way)
    “Do not postpone happiness”
    (Jeff Tweedy, Sydney 2007)

“Put yer good money on the sunrise”
    (Tim Rogers)

Like I said, it's not a bad album and I do really like it. I just get more from the others and always seem to reach for another album before Vs. It may be partly because I played it to death for most of the 90s, I'm hoping the reissue will rekindle my Vs love!
