  • Ok dirtyfrank38, I'll play:

    BSSM
    Mother's Milk
    Californication
    Freaky Styley
    Stadium Arcadium
    Uplift Mofo Party
    RHCP
    By The Way
    One Hot Minute

BTW, what's gonna happen now that John is officially out of the group. You think they return from their hiatus with a new guitarist? Bring back Dave? They gotta do something. Maybe they'll call it quits. Flea has a ridiculous amount of creative energy that could be put in a number of directions. Chad plays with Chickenfoot now, correct? And Anthony seems content with raising kids and sitting on his pile of money. The albums named above might be all we get from this SoCal quartet. Thoughts?

According to Rollingstone, they've recruited Josh Klinghoffer to replace John.

Damn, I must have missed that. I check rsonline almost everyday. Well that's good news. He almost certainly doesn't play the songs with the intensity of John, but an adequate replacement nonetheless. I just get chills when I hear some of John's solos in Live in Hyde Park.

BUT the klinghoffer thing is still sweet news because the peppers are working on a new album now.

I've always really loved One Hot Minute. Not sure if it's the Navarro factor or what. Just think it's a great album, one of my favourite 90s albums for sure.

Of the other RHCP albums, only ever listen to BSSM & Californication these days.

and then all the rest in no particular order.

Despite all the Fruciante vs Navarro arguements, I happen to absolutely love One Hot Minute. That record was released back when i was only in 8th grade. All i knew about RHCP at that point was BSSM and I had no idea who the guitarist was and i didn't really care. I just remember listening to OHM non-stop that entire year thinking how cool that band was after listening to only two albums. Later, i listened to more of their music and finally started paying attention to who the members of the band were and being able to tell apart the different styles, but that didn't keep One Hot Minute from being really great. Different yes, terrible no.

BSSM is miles out in front for me. Californication, By The Way and Stadium could all be the same album so I've ranked them as one (play any non-single album track and I'd struggle to pick the album it came off). I quite like OHM because it was something a little different for them so that gets 4th. The first 3 are also lumped together because I wouldn't want to listen to any of them again now.

I think Josh will be a good replacement for John as long as RHCP don't try to turn him into John. They need to freshen things up and take a few chances now, they've turned into a radio-friendly hit machine and that's a damn shame as they can be so good when they take a risk. I'll always have a soft spot for RHCP but as long as John keeps putting out great solo albums (and I honestly feel that the majority of his albums are better than the last 4 RHCP efforts) I'll be happy.

If we included JF albums in this, Shadows would be 2nd (only behind BSSM because of how much that album meant to me when it came out)

  • i mostly agree with you there

i miiiight put mm 2 then shadows, but def the main reason the last three albums rank so high is because of frusc's amazing playing and sound that clearly come straight from his solo efforts...

The last thing they should do is bring back dave. John was such a big part of their best music, but I was wondering how much further they could go in that direction.
