I was hoping that someone may be able to help out a newer Mac user (and someone who is not very good with computers).

I am trying to use an external hard drive to transfer some boots (FLACs) from a PC (Windows XP) to a Mac. I currently have a Western Digital My Book external hard drive. Will the drive be compatible with both systems? Is there a different type of external hard drive that will work better? Do I need to format the drive before transferring the files to it?

Thanks for the help!

drive should be formatted already, your drive will do fine, just move everything.

shame whoever is getting a mac!

Make sure the drive is formatted "FAT 32" and not "NTFS." Macs cant read NTFS formatted hard drives.

If the HD is formatted NTFS and you don't want to go another route, you'll have to reformat the HD before the Mac will read it. WARNING: Reformatting your HD will completely erase everything on it. Back up your backup if you need to do this.

Beyond that it should be as simple as unplugging the HD from your PC and plugging it into the MAC.

    iTunes caveat:
In case you're not aware, iTunes doesn't natively recognize FLAC formatted files so any that you have won't be added to your iTunes library.
