Whats a good jumping off point for these guys? Their albums span a massive amount of time, are they wildly different?

Start at the start! Their first album (it's self-titled but often gets called "Blue Garden") is absolute genius. The albums aren't that different considering the length of time they span, and how big the gaps in between them are.

I think you should listen to their albums in order from the first one to "Pine/Cross Dover". You don't really need "Give Us Barrabas" as it's more like a collection of leftovers, but if you can find the unreleased 3rd album ("The Ballad of Jody Frosty", have a search online) you should play them in this order:

    Masters of Reality
    Sunrise on the Sufferbus
    The Ballad Of Jody Frosty
    Welcome to the Western Lodge
    Down In The Hole
    Pine/Cross Dover
    “Do not postpone happiness”
    (Jeff Tweedy, Sydney 2007)

“Put yer good money on the sunrise”
    (Tim Rogers)
  • Thanks for that, very helpful.

No, thank you - this thread inspired me to blast out the Flak 'n' Flight live disc in the office today! It freaked everyone out! There's an insane version of John Brown on there that's almost 8 minutes long.

I hope you enjoy working your way through some truly great music.

In my all time top ten bands and very underrated I think. I don't suppose they help themselves with huge gaps between albums or any other activity but any fan of QOTSA would probably love this band which are at least 3 x better than them!!

Kinda funny, I just deleted most of their discography off my itunes today. I guess you lose an interested party and you gain one.
