To all passionate photographers out there

Hey you all,

I have a question.
I would love to buy a good digital SLR camera. I'm not a professional photographer (which is maybe not surprising when you read this thread) and I would be quite happy if anyone of you who has some experience / knowledge about cameras / taking pictures gives some advice.
Is there also a good program to manipulate pics free to download? Or cheap?
And do you know any good way to learn more about photography? Maybe some book?
Sorry if these questions are a bit funny but I'm totally new to photography...

cheers!

Or you can come to terms and realize
You're the only one who can't forgive yourself

First thing is first, what's your budget? That is huge when it comes to digital SLR as there are camera's that come with or without lenses and that is where the expense really comes from. Then, what are you planning on taking pictures of? Are you going to take pictures of environments, people or day/night settings? I will scrounge around for the book I have that was a pretty decent book for starters. As for a program, Adobe Photoshop Elements is an excellent program that I believe is only $99. If you get the full Photoshop, well that's another story  Let me know if you have any other questions...

    Hey, thanks for the reply.
I would like to take pictures of details. Maybe random things and put them together with some software.
I'm also interested in environments but I definitely like the details and would put more emphasis on them. Probably day and night when it comes to traveling.
My budget is rather small. Maybe 700-800 CAN$ max. :(
What is the difference between Photoshop Elements and the whole package?

    hi :P
I'm sorry if you already got a good camera.
If it's true that you are not a professional photographer,
I think a preferably light&small camera is good.
(but a such camera is easy to shake  )

A digital SLR camera is weighty while traveling.
My dad always have a weighty bag...

    well,,i don't know much,,,sorry :(

don't worry ;) I'm happy to hear from you!

I like a weighty camera because it gives me the feeling that it's actually a real camera and not one of those everyone has now and with which everyone takes random pics of random things and all the feeling for creativity or art are gone. It's a commodity now. So I want to have a heavy camera which looks like one you actually have to work to get a good pic (or an even better one than with the normal small ones) ;)

    cheers!
