I think it's very good! It isn't as immediate as their debut, but I like that they're trying new things. My favorites are "White Sky," "Taxi Cab," and "Cousins".
  • have it, but havent given it a listen yet. VW are such an interesting band. Their sound was such a breath of fresh air when their first record came out. I also think their whole image thing is cool although it seems to have been a major point of contention and focus with the critics. The whole preppy, ivy league, boat shoes and cricket shirts thing. They look, talk and sound musically like wealthy people, but all the press I have seen reguarding Contra has been the band saying how pissed off they are that critics and the blogs and even fans see them as these rich, wealthy, artiocratic people, when really they arent.

I also found their sound rather interesting on the 1st album because it had overt ties to African music, and one thing that is notable about the whole indie scene that VW are a part of, and are currently flagship bands of, is that the whole indie scene is unique in modern music history in that it really has no ties to black rock, or blues, or black music per say. Arcade Fire, Iron and Wine, Bright Eyes, Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective, Bon Iver, are some of the biggest bands that have appeared in the last few years and few if any have a sound that screams black blues or black music influences.

I really like their video for Cousins (I like Cousins a lot, but seems like a song that should have been on their first album. Maybe it just didn't make it to their debut album :?: )

I have it and i've listened to it a couple times.

I was not a big fan of the first album I thought it was just okay. So far the same with this one. I think if you really liked the first album then you have a good shot at likeing this one too.

It ain't bad they just don't get me going.

Can't wait to check out the album, been a Vampire Weekend fan for a little while now. I've only heard 'Cousins' but it's infectious & gets stuck in my head constantly!

  • I am really enjoying this album. It reminds me a lot of Paul Simon's "Graceland"

Anyone get the bonus disc with 3 the 3 songs on it?

Vampire Weekend Meets Toy Selectah- Contra Megamelt

There's a "Cousins" remix on it as well as 2 other songs called Contramelt A and Contramelt B. Good stuff.

  • Ive listened to it twice, but I gotta say its pretty dark compared to the first record. The first song off the debut record was immediate, this band caught my eye and ear immediately. This album its new stuff, they dont totally reinvent the wheel, but its different. Its still vampire weekend though.

Have to give it a couple more listens. Sort of disappointed it isnt as upbeat and "paul simon-y" as the previous

Yeah, my only complaint about the album is that it sacrifices immediacy for production values on a couple of the songs... still, it's good that they tried to branch out more.
  • Yes Contra is amazing!!

It's not a total departure from the last album, but it is definitely different. They are growing and getting better :)

New video from Vampire Weekend, Given Up The Gun. Pretty funny. Jake Gyllenhall, Joe Jonas  , RZA, Lil Jon make guests appearances.
