  • went to Dachau.

    meh.

I can look around pretty much anywhere to remind me of the hatred and ignorance in this world.

I don't think anyone with a relative that died at Dachau would think visiting would be "meh"

"meh" meaning I wouldn't do it again... I wouldn't suggest it to anyone. Not because it is insignificant or unimportant or not moving or whatever, but because I came away horribly depressed. And I am depressed enough as it is. It made me embarassed to be part of this diseased fucking species.

I certainly didn't mean to offend anyone.

same here....grandparents and uncle didn't make it out. My dad, his brother & sister made it out, but they, understandably, have never gotten over it.

Your dad was in Auschwitz? WOW!!

There's so many words in the English language but sometimes there just ain't enough...

Growing up with a family of survivors, as well as with friend's whose parents are survivors, it has always been part of my life. Once I got older, people were always shocked when I mention my family's background.

This past Halloween, my neighbor mentioned that he was going to dress like a Nazi, mainly to shock his wife. He was a bit taken aback when I mentioned that I was the son of a survivor!

It feels like it happened a very long time ago to most people i think.

wow, we got a relative of someone from Auschwitz :-o

i did apologize at the start but i hope i dont offend anyone etc by making this thread.

I watched a bbc documentry on a survivor of Auschwitz, he was in the 2nd camp and used to switch uniforms wih a jewish prisoner as he wanted to witness what was going on inside the worse one.. he used to smuggle in ciggerates (he said they were the most valuble thing) and he managed to save he life of a dutch jew who needed new jews. He did this by giving him 2 packs of ciggerates so someone could fixed them.

Sadly he didnt know what happened to him.. unil the bbc reporter said they did research and he lived till 77.. they then hooked him up with the guys sister and watched a dvd that he recorded of himself giving an account to help historians etc, was truley emotional.

well certainly it's before most of our lifetimes... I'm always amazed that we continue to let similar things happen though  I'm not sure we've learned the lessons that we should have. I'm not sure we've learned any lessons at all.

I've been to Sachsenhausen but not Auschwitz.
I find it very interesting, I don't mean that in a Neo-Nazi way or anything, I'd find it very heartbreaking and horrible, but I think its very important for people - especially our generation - to see things like this.

I'm planning on going to Hiroshima when (if) my family does a trip to Japan in the spring. My father doesn't understand why I'd want to go (my grandfather survived Hiroshima) but I've done a few history projects on it and I've been meaning to see the memoial and the museum.

I want to go to to visit Auschwitz, friends have been and it has left its mark on all of them.
I've friends in Poland who have all said they went as school children to see the camp as a school trip.
When I'm in Berlin I'm hoping to go to the Jewish Museum. In Prague I went to the Pinkas Synagogue which amazed me.
