Having got the entire box set for X-mas, [ :D ] this made me wonder what other people thought about it.

So, do you think that the remix contributes to the songs on Ten, updating it's sound while keeping the same vibe?

OR

Do you prefer the original mixes?

Me personally, I like the redux, but I do feel the intial vibe is lost. It sounds like each song is mixed the exact same way, the drums sound exactly the same, the vocals all sound exactly the same. I liked the mixes O'Brien did on the Rearview Mirror Greatest Hits cd, but not to keen on this redux. I also feel like they added more compression to the drums and it kinda makes the cymbals really tinny. My favorite way to enjoy this album is by listening to the original mixes on vinyl. What do you think about it? Sorry if this has been posted before, I searched for it and didn't really find anything that asked this specifically. (SOUNDGARDEN REUNION, WHOO!!:mrgreen: )

  • I think the redux-thing is sort of "half-assed", or rather a missed opportunity maybe. It feels like Geroge Lucas re-edited/CGI-filled versions of Star Wars.

    Chainging the Unplugged gig.
The LIVE EP not being complete.
    Brickwalling the mix.

    Disturbs me.

But maybe I had too high hopes beforehand. Like having alot more B-sides included.

I didn't bother going all out for the big huge nonsense package. I just got the CD/DVD.

Not disappointed or surprised about the edited Unplugged. I don't think they've released a DVD yet that wasn't edited somehow. Not very surprising. They probably don't own the footage anyway.

As for the remixing... I loved Ten. Then I grew up and left 1992. I listen to it now, and the reverb alone makes me cringe. The whole recording seemed to be lathered in Aunt Jemima.

Listening to the remixes was entirely refreshing. They seemed, to me at least, leaner, thinner, and cleaner. The reverb was turned way down and I could suddenly hear things I could never hear before. There were suddenly layers that were always drowned out. I enjoyed this immensely.

Now, I don't have a super stereo, $500 head-swallowing headphones, turntable, or any of that nonsense. I have a PC w/ $80 speakers/woofer and WinAmp. Or perhaps slightly-above-standard car stereo. Before that, just a string of <$100 CD players. So maybe my sound equipment limited my enjoyment a little. But really, I'm listening to redux on the same equipment as original, and the difference is very noticeable and, most importantly, pleasing to me.

  • I LOVE the redux version! Much leaner, as it has been said. There is so much more to hear :)
Makes me ache, makes me shake...
...is it so wrong to think that love can keep us safe?
  • The redux is superior to the original - let the old memories go - If the redux sound came out in 91 as the original then a release of the original now would sound like shit, come on we all know it - it is very muddled
What I enjoy most about the redux is the chance to hear all those hidden and layered sounds that were lost in the earlier mix

now I know the audio doesn't "line up" 100% (fu! youtube.com) but I really think this shows it to be true

It is best when using headphones (even shitty ones)

ps - I am not sure a remix of any of the other albums would be a good thing - actually I am sure they would not

Love the Redux... it's crisper, but didn't lose the power the original had.
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.

Well, if I hadn't recieved as a gift from my wife, I would've never got it, but it's neat to have either way. I agree with one person before, saying that everything was sort of half-assed. But I agree with you about how the remixes are not as muddy or drowned out as on the original, you can finally hear what Ed is saying! lol But I think O'Brien could've done a better job, some key back up guitar parts that I'm use to hearing in the fore-front are turned down. I think the song Alive sounds better as it was originally mix. Yes it has tons a reverb, but I think that the new mix doesn't make it sound as epic as it was, everytime they play it on the radio, it just seems like it's missing something, plus they fixed Eddie's shaky out-of-tune "heard" words in the chorus, but I think it made it interesting that way. The only mixes I really enjoy from the redux are Jeremy and Porch. I love the remix of Jeremy except the end, when there are those random "Spoken...Spoken"s and Ed is belting out the "Whoaaa" It's like they turned up the Spoken's (which are kind of annoying) and turned down Ed belting it out, losing the emotionally affect in my opinion, but I mean you know, really, lol, if I really had a GRIPE about anything it'd be that. I'm trying not to seem like I just critique the entire time while I listen, being a amatuer producer/mixer, I listen for those types of things as to what really makes the song, so please don't think I'm crazy for trying to find these little things! lol And I'm not saying I'm right and your wrong at all, I just wanted to see other people's opinions about it.

Yes I agree, Jeremy is one of the better remixed ones for sure! And it does sound pretty awesome with headphones. Read my other comment on here if you care to hear what I said about the layered sounds, etc. And I completely agree with you about the remix of any other albums. VS. is one of my favorite albums from any group, and I loved the way it is mixed, each song is an individually mixed to sound different, have different vibes, I can't really think of what they could "improve" on it.
