I've always had trouble doing this-for some reason I can't sing/play at the same time. does anybody have any tips on how to not lose focus of playing guitar when trying to sing? thanks!

Master the song On guitar until it's second nature. Than add the singing. U may catch yourself screwing up the same part everytime so you may have to slow down the strumming and singing to get the varying degrees of rhthyms down. But as the above poster said, it's practice.

Keep practicing. I used to think 'I'll never be able to do this!', but once I got it, it was easy! It's like changing chords, one day it clicks.
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V

  • practice. The first song I was able to sing and play was "Not For You" and the verse to "Smells Like Teen Spirit". If you practice and keep trying, I can almost guarantee you'll get it! Also, try playing along with the song. It helps, a lot. Everyone here has great advice. Sorry if I'm just repeating

Try to do a simple song like Long Road. One chord type songs might be best to start with. Then try two, then three... ect.
Here's a new demo called "in the fire":
