ah thank you for verifying;) 'Education' is great.. and matt did wonderfully on 'hold on'! in Philly 'last' year... Sounded perfect....

Not really - they cut out the ending from the original version which had great drum fills. The song just kinda ended abruptly without allowing Matt to shine.

That being said, I'm sure he would've

sounded good from where i stood! Then again i could have had some temp hearing damage from the previous nights

how bout the fact that matt uses the beat of JCP as a drum riff going back into the climax of even flow after the solo is done and before stone plays his riff to bring it all home.

not really. The rhythm for JCP is much harder than that. The evenflow rhythm is really a half assed version

half assed? I don't think so....sounds like he's hitting the same amount of tom-hits...the accentuation may be a tad different due to the different riffs. Either way...he's doing a fine job.

I'm not knocking on Matt, the guys is my favorite drummer....period. Im just saying what he plays on evenflow is nooooo where near as hard as JCP. The playing for JCP is basically an extremely tight and fast snare roll while going on the toms. There are soooo many accents on the snare for JCP and for Evenflow its basically just a nice tom tom beat.

As for his best playing in Pearl Jam, live -wise that would have to be these 2 youtube vids:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbeR-9-5a0g
Incredible fucking playing there, especially during the jam at around 4:45 and up.
I love the fills at like 5:30 how they accent what mike is playing and also 5:53 where he plays on the snare followed by a fast fill around the toms.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkoMX7zdhGQ
Just fast forward to the solo at around 5:00. Just an incredibly sick solo by him, enough said.

On RECORD I would say his best album is riot act. There is alot of cool things he does throughout the album. And surprisingly enough I think his best drum track may be GHOST. Check it out and listen to his playing, it really is great. I also dig the way he grooves on the fixer. His high hat playing followed by the crash hit during the main riffs are awesome. and his crash hits and tom fills during the outro are cool.

The new DRUM magazine article says he goes through drum heads and cymbals like its nothing and that while a drummer like Travis Barker clearly shows his hard hitting, Matt hides it by having quick as shit wrists.

    TL;DR

Matt is a fucking pro, and anyone who thinks he sucks seriously is a dumbass in all honesty.

Yeh I've seen Pearl Jam, too. But I can't remember the dates.
  • Ok who is playing drums on "hold on" (education and black red yellow too for that matter) ??? I see it's from V.S out takes but some of lost dogs was re recorded right? Because if that's Matt drumming that's the shit right there ;)

That's Dave Krusen on "Hold On".
  • I love this thread. When I listen to music, the drums always stand out in the front. Matt has been one of my favorite drummers since I saw the video for Fell On Black Days. Do The Evolution from Winnipeg '05 is pretty fucking good. So is Save You on Letterman, but my favorite is the Matt Cam version of In My Tree from Touring Band 2000. He owns that song and does Jack Irons justice.

On an unrelated and somewhat related note, it is nice to hear Dave Grohl on the skins again with Them Crooked Vultures. :)

Got Some is very good, even the odd timed rim-shots. Matt on many of his songs has cool parts, but it may not be a part that goes thru the whole song, but it's cool none the less. I'd throw Grievance into this mix too, as well as even Sleight Of Hand - It's subtle, but a cool groove to play.

I’m an amateur Air Band Drummer/concert goer and I’ve always wondered where Carter from DMB ranks on the drums. He who has the biggest set should win this competition and his is HUGE!

I honestly don’t know dick about drumming, I just wondered how good Carter is considered cause that’s the biggest damn drum kit I’ve ever seen.

Carter can put almost all rock drummers to shame.

    Carter puts Portnoy to SHAME.

Portnoy is a just a freakin show off. Even watching him play just screams "douche bag" to me. Carter is classy and has groove.

I think 'In the Moonlight' is cool ass drumming. Can't believe that song never made it on the album. Thank goodness for Lost Dogs! If you want to hear some other good Matt drumming, check out Wellwater Conspiracy! Cool stuff there and Matt does it all singing lead vocals!!!

JCP reminds me of You Could Be Mine (G'n'R's Matt Sorum) just a little bit...
