I think I messed up with a friend (How do I fix things?)

This needed a new set of eyes, I was hoping you guys could help.
So long story short, last year I met an amazing girl. The problem was, I was moving away a short time after meeting her, so things never got really solid between the two of us. The whole thing lasted throughout the summer, with both of us thinking it would go away at the end and it would all be fine. It didn't... A couple weeks after I moved she visited me in the new city I'm in, and we slept together, opening up a whole new can of worms. We both had feelings, but neither wanted to admit it.
A month and a half later she starts to date my former best friend, as he fell for her and was giving her all the attention in the world. I'm angry with him because he wasn't upfront, and flat out lied to me the first time I asked him. Her and I had a giant fight, both admitting how much we still mean to eachother, and saying some things on both ends that probably should never have been said in the first place. A month later, her start speaking again, and I'm happy to have a new friend in my life (again) because I really do care about her as a person. She dumped my friend, took him back, then dumped him again once we started talking. She asked if her and I could be close with them dating and I said 'If he truly makes you happy and you aren't just settling, then yes. You and I may have some difficulties, but you deserve to be happy'... Turns out she dumped him anyways. She says she knows we can never date (and I don't have an interest after all of this shit) but I still get the feeling she has feelings for me. I live a couple hours away, but am back home fairly often. I want our friendship to truly work, but, above all, I want her to be happy.
What should I do? Suggestions? Opinions? Am I an asshole? I hope we have the day where we're both truly happy, because together, as good as it was for a while, we were not. I told her today 'If you dumped my friend so you could be friends with me, you made a mistake, I'll be your friend no matter what you do as long as it's for the right reasons'... She texted me back saying she just needed to be independent, but wants me in her life.
Thoughts pit geniuses?
