Ok, after a long, week and a half ranking of Riot Act, which wasn't all that popular, it's time for the Big One. We're ranking Ten plus 9 b-sides. In this case, Ten + 9 = 20. We had a Wild Card round in which 2,000 Mile Blues and Evil Little Goat were eliminated. This got us down to 20 songs from 22. Oh yeah, I put Hold On, mistakenly, into Rank Em! Vs. That's why it isn't in this one. Sorry if I missed anything else. 20 songs is about as big as these things should get. If that's too much, give me a top 5 or something like that.

My top 11 of this list are virtually interchangeable. Literally, there are days where Once could be at the top. This is probably what I like the most consistently.

It's amazing making this list, and after all these years and all these listens, I still LOVE listening to these songs.

Also, I was 10 when Ten came out (ironically). I listened to the studio albums at that time a ton, but didn't listen to either unreleased or soundtracks that I could remember. I've known about Yellow Ledbetter since I can remember, but pretty much everything else (SOLAT, Breath, Footsteps, Brother, Just a Girl, Dirty Frank) I pretty much just discovered in the past year. Wow. It's like finding an entire album of their A material out of the blue. I have no doubt that they could have split these 20 songs into 2 CD's, released this around the time of Vs, and had another multi-platinum hit on their hands. Absolutely amazing stuff.

This is impossible! It's almost painful to see some amazing songs near the bottom of the list.

I found this set of songs easier to rank than some of the others, at least the top few. I think it's because they're so defined in my memory of discovering the band.

My older brother had the yellow CD of Ten and the 12" vinyl of Jeremy. At the time the record player was in my bedroom and, not having too many records of my own, I stuck it on one night. I liked Jeremy but the two b-sides, the live version of Alive and Footsteps, were the ones that really got me. I couldn't stop listening to them and when I hear either one now they completely bring me back to when I was 16. The two songs were so different - Footsteps was so stark and raw, while Alive just made me want to be at that gig, but with both of them the lyrics, the voice, the whole sound, everything just blew me away.

When I listened to the album (then and now), although the songs were great, the production put me off a bit. It didn't sound like the same band as on those b-sides. I got to see them live the following summer and I was completely hooked, but I still think the Ten songs sound much better live than on record. though it's hard to put into words why. I remember reading a quote from Elvis Costello saying he caught them live, was blown away by them but when he got the album afterward he was really disappointed, even though they were the same songs he had heard them play.

Anyway, I'm going off the point a bit there, but I suppose I was just trying to explain my top two are linked to how I got into the band and that I have much more of an emotional attachment to them than the others.

1. Footsteps - Just incredible, gives me shivers every time.
2. Alive
3. Black - I'm guessing this will win, wouldn't really argue with that.
4. State of Love & Trust - A great song, though the solo does sound like the theme from Rainbow
5. Release
6. Why Go - First song they played the first time I saw them. You never forget your first time...
