Well, just got done. Now have seen all 5 seasons. Brilliant show. without a doubt one of the best tv shows of all time. Rank it up there with The Sopranos, and Arrested Development.

As a sociology major, I couldnt be happier with the way The Wire dealt with the issues it presented. They got DEEP into the aspects of everything. This is sociology. The people who sell drugs arent just some heartless idiots, and the police need to get quotas, they need to keep crime down and make it seem like crime is not rising, which of course leads to profiling and false charges. The media is slimy and sensationalist, and the police and political arenas run things based on a secret society of sorts. They keep it quiet, they dont clean house. They keep scandals quiet.

For some reason I didnt enjoy seaosn 3, the Political arena season, as much as the others. My favorite seasons were the Street, The School, and The media.

I also love the cynical and dark tone of the show. The creator of this show spares no one, and seems to conclude that its ALL corrupt, from the inner city, to the police, to the media, to politics. I also loved how despite the dark nature of the show, alot of the most ruthless characters were shown at times to have a nice/positive side, which is of course true of everyone. But how often does a "cop" drama show criminals as torn/lost/flawed-yet good hearted individuals? I cant think of another show like that.

How accurate is the show? I know The Sopranos had real mobsters in NJ watching every week, did The Wire accurately portray the media newsroom, schools, and politics and the inside of a police operation? I think the inner city portrayal was accurate.

  • alot of the show was heartbreaking. The kids falling through the cracks in season 4. Seeing what happened to Bubs' friend. The ruthless cycle of despair in the inner city.

Hell of a show, but as I said, dark as hell, and depressing.

I also love the complete middle finger given to the farce called the drug war.

This show points out what i have long argued, and why I feel electoral politics, democrats and republicans, is completely meaningless.

To solve the issues raised in this show, you need more than some reformist politican. You need more than some FBI/CIA enforced drug war. WHat do you do, in order to deal with the fact that schools in inner cities are ill funded and frankly dont teach kids about things that matter. If your parents are in jail and your friends are selling on the corner, what the hell does George Washington mean to you?

If police are corrupt and only care about quotas, only care about not getting ahuge body count, and secretly keep crime stats intentionally flawed, then what should be done about it?
