your favorite film scores?

I would guess that this kind of music doesn't get discussed much here, but what/who are some of your favorite film scores/film composers? I've always been a fan of John Williams. the man was born not only to compose some of the greatest movie music, but also Christmas music. Danny Elfman's score for "Edward Scissorhands" and just about anything by John Carpenter, especially "Halloween," are also at the top of my list.

Obviously John williams is right up there with the best. The likes of Raiders of The Lost Ark and the Imperial March are superb pieces of music in themselves.
As scores though, they have to suit and augment the film. I can't imagine how hard this can be. The Blade Runner soundtrack by Vangelis is one of the best ever written from this point of view. Dark Knight was particularly good too. Not all that noticeable as a piece of music, but the soundscapes created were amazing. Really set the mood.

Braveheart has one of the best scores, IMO.

Obviously I'm a fan of the Star Wars scores, and I love that you mentioned Halloween. The music in that is so eerie and weird, but it's so distinctive. Definitely a good choice.

not a film, but LOST has some great scores every season, especially their season finales in the epic scenes. can't even imagine what season six music will be like.

Aboslutely. That is such a great film, with an even more great score. Apparently a lot of that movie was filmed in the northern mountains of Georgia. I happened to be there for Thanksgiving when I found out that trivial fact and it just made my stay there that much more enjoyable.

Love Danny Elfman's work, but I'll admit I'm biased having grown up listening to Oingo Boingo.

Peter Gabriels work on Last Temptation of Christ is fantastic.

    Lord of the RIngs

Dead Man Walking (Love this version of Long Road) (Soundtrack, not a score)

I'm Not There (Soundtrack, not a score)

And as others have said, Tarantino puts together a great soundtrack.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

The Thin Red Line by Hans Zimmer has to be at the top. Journey To The Line is probably one of the most used scores for movie previews. It's one of those songs that after you hear it and know it you start hearing it in a lot of different places.

Also Craig Armstrong has some really great scores, with his best being Plunkett & MacLeane. The song combo of Hanging and Escape is another example of a score that when you hear it you'll reconize it on a lot of different things. It was used for the Pearl Harbor, Patriot, and Armeggedon previews as well as some others. He also wrote the score for The Island, which has the song My Name Is Lincoln, which is another example of a widely used track.

Another really good one that a lot of people don't expect is the score for the first Transformer movie by Steve Jablonsky. Just check it out before you judge it. I promise it's not as cheesy as the movie itself was.
    It's all about the music...

Any of Taruntino's scores are great. The Basterds score is awesome. A bit of an extension of the love for Powderfinger thread the score for "Two Hands" is great. Few Powderfinger songs in it, a young Heath Ledger starring. Great movie

LOST rules! To me, it's the best show on TV and I can't wait for the final season. I think I have to buy the soundtracks for the seasons.
