Question about Needle And The Damage Done in Chicago

At the beginning of this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfTqq-i8-1U) video, as an intro to The Needle And The Damage Done, Ed says: "You know there's been some sadness lately about that... but it feels like we lost him a long time ago, actually..."

Does anyone know who he was talking about? Unfortunately the video starts, I guess, after he mentions who he's referring to.

It's Michael Jackson. I was there and he was talking about how he was listening to such diverse musical groups in the late 60's and early 70's, one of them being the Jackson 5, and how influenced he was by that era of music. Referring to how Jackson has been out of the spotlight for so long before his death, and I guess the song choice was based on how he died.

I don't think it was Michael Jackson.. if I recall correctly, I thought that it was a friend of the band's (please, if someone remembers the name, that'd be great) who had been killed in a car accident a few months before, and as this was his birthday, they dedicated the show to him. Tunes like Long Road, Dissident, Sad, Come Back, Man of the Hour, Rearviewmirror, and Needle and the Damage Done were all played, and seem to share the theme of people or things present in life, which one day are no longer there.

They dedicated Come Back to Dr. Michael Richter (Jeff sang Happy Birthday) but before Needle and the Damage Done, Eddie was talking about Michael Jackson, his music and how it influenced him growing up, and how he felt he left us before he did.

Strange, I must've missed that somehow. I thought the only Michael Jackson reference came at Rats.

  • Michael Jackson no doubt. Ed said the bit about the Jackson 5, then he played Needle/Damage solo (which ended with the riff from "Ben")...and then the band went straight into Rats.

there were at least 3 deaths referenced that night, the 2 that have been mentioned and a 3rd that I wont discuss, but that reference was about Michael Jackson.
