Well I'm not a Matt-hater but there was nothing about this performance that is going to make the haters stop hating.

But what I really liked about this video was the sound quality. Probably the best sound I've ever heard on a PJ youtube video recorded from the audience.

I've never been a Matt hater, I don't know any Matt haters either.

I can tell you that after the four Philly shows, I have an increased amount of respect for the man, that's one hell of a workout
  • I don't even need to watch it. I think Matt is fantastic and PJ is infinitely better with him as their drummer. Personality wise, they are more cohesive as a band with him at the drums. As PJ nears 20 years together that cannot be overrated.

    Totally disagree

  • I'm not a Matt hater, I don't know of any Matt haters and in my opinion any one who hates him for his drumming is an idiot. They became the True Pearl Jam when he joined. ( my opinion again )

The sound is taken from the bootleg PJ released - it's not recorded by the cameraperson.

And I still don't like the way Matt plays stuff from Ten :D

Agreed. The No Code stuff too. Jack played the crap out of those songs.

That being said, I think Matt's great.

I really wanted to shove this down the throats of all the people dissing matt on youtube but just made this thread here instead. I know no one "hates" matt here.

His playing on that song was awesome. He was grooving more then he used to with that song and was hitting the cymbals alot more.

Not a Matt hater, just prefer Jack.

The above link gives a nice taste of Jack's style.
  • better yet, just go to Youtube and search Casper, WY 1995...Wow what a show. The crowds just aren't like this any more.

Happy I experience PJ in the 90's
  • What kind of camera were they using???
Matt is AMAZING, drumming is HARD.
Also I tend to like the later albums of PJ best.

  • i worship at the altar of No Code, and Jack was a lot of the reason why, therefore i love Jack.

at first i thought Matt was pretty boring for the most part, and hated most of his songs, but lately he's made me a fan. i think they sort of let him off the leash on the last few tours and Johnny Guitar fucking rocks. I think he has found a nice fit in the band now.

Yea hes definitely been going back to his earlier playing ever since 08. He goes fuckin crazy from like 4:25 on and I love that double kick at 4:37. His playing during mikes solo is crazy as hell too, actually a little too crazy. the rhythm he starts playing at one point is totally off with the song, not messing up though, he does that every once in awhile. thats probably his jazz side coming out. But I hate it when drummers dont show off during a guitar solo. Matt always shows off during guitar solos.

Let's look at that one more time...

  • Matt's songwriting takes more of a beating here than his drumming does.
  • Like his drumming a lot. As for his singing....not so much.

Totally agree. Seems like he tried to make the drums sound more like Jack during this last tour during the No Code era songs.

Didn't relise there was ANY 'Matt Haters'... :? But if YOU need your "FIX" of CYMBALS...then Just listen to 'DAVE A'...PMSL :P
  • I admit, I love Dave A on drums. But the band is better with Matt and he is one hell of a drummer.

Not a hater at all. I can prefer boxed wine to the expensive stuff. Doesn't mean I don't recognize it's quality. 8-)
