    I needed to figure this out for personal and professional reasons. Here's my 2 cents (take or leave.) Within the lyrics there are parentheticals that indicate alternate or additional words frequently used when sung live.

    I Got ID (a.k.a I Got Shit)

    My lips are shaking my nails are bit off
    (It’s) Been a month (and a day) since I've heard myself talk
    All the advantage this life's got on me
    Picture a(n empty) cup in the middle of the sea

    And I fight back in my mind
    Never lets me be right
    I got memories I got shit
    So much it don’t show
    I walked in light when you held me in that night
    I walked the line when you held my hand that night

    An empty shell seems so easy to crack
    Got all these questions don't know who I could even ask
    So I'll just lie alone and wait for the dream
    Where (or That) I'm not ugly and you’re looking at me

    And instead you beg
    All blue-eyed, sitting there
    “If just once I could feel love
    Oh stare back at me,” yeah
    But I walked in light when you held me in that night
    Oh I walked in line when you held my hand that night
    Oh I walked in light when you held me close at night
    But I paid the price, never held you in real life

    The biggest difference in interpretation is that I've added the quotation in the last stanza. When the person speaking quotes the other person (in the relationship) saying they never really felt loved. Only in the speaker's mind/version of the relationship was there love on both sides. Heartbreaking because this imagined love was the greatest love the speaker has known - "I walked in light…" past tense and Hence "an empty cup in the middle of the sea". He/She's got nothing "I've got memories, I've got shit/ So much it don't show…" It all seems to fall in place when you think of that part as a quote.

    What does he say after that?
