As long as we keep invading and occupying countries that had nothing to do with 911 we will continue to create terrorists......likely more than ever before. And going to war constantly in the middle east will never put a stop to it.

The Iraq war is a huge disaster. And Iraq had nothing to do with 911. But it has made another 911 more likely.

No shit it was a big fuck up . I was refering to Afghanistan, but Im sure youre like everyone else on here that thinks we shouldn't have done anything after 911.We should have never gone into Iraq in the first place,but I believe our intensions were good. Nobody knew that the shea's and Sunnis would start killing eachother like they did. 911 is not why we went to Iraq in the first place. We went because we thought Sadam had WMD's. and he violated something like 16 sanctions. It wasn't just our intel either that was telling us he had WMD's.

The veteran was refering to Iraq. The intelligence was fixed around the policy. People from Thomas Friedman who supported the Iraq invasion, to the presidents father, wrote that we would be an occupying power in a bitterly hostile land. The veteran does make broader points then just Iraq as you have picked up on.

Perhaps we should have nuked Afghanistan on the heels of 911. Gotten Osama, the Taliban, and been done with it.

Because the intel that we were getting was telling us that he had WMD's and he also violated something like 16 sanctions. And people always seem to forget 911 just happened. So in a post 911 world many people did not feel comfortable knowing that S.H. might just have WMD's and just might use them on us. whether it be chemical or a suitcase. So therefore many people supported us going in to remove him. We had no intention on starting a war IMO.After he was removed from power our intensions were to help the Iraqis set up a democratic body of govenment. Nobody knew what was going to happen as far as all the fighting between tribes is concened. I still think though Iraq is a better place without Saddam and those two psychopath killers he called his sons.

Also a lot of people seem to forget that we do have rules of engagement. Soldiers just can't open up fire on people because they feel threatned or think that they might be insurgents. They must first be fired upon and then they still have to get permission to return fire. So the Idea that were over ther just killing innocent people for the hell of it is bull shit.

Yes we do have ROE but they are not always followed, not to mention it is difficult to follow them when you don't even know who is an 'enemy' and who is not. I don't think anyone said they're over there killing innocent people for the hell of it, but innocent people do get killed because of the occupation. Personally, I have heard multiple firsthand accounts from boots on the ground that have accidentally killed innocent people. Also, pilots dropping bombs do not need to be shot at before they can unload their explosives, and it would be naive to assume that every single bomb hits a perfect 'bad guy' target without any collateral damage.

Bottom line, we need to remove ourselves from these occupations. They are draining us of resources while creating more fear and hatred in the hearts of these occupied people. Innocents are being killed every day, on both sides. Our military is exhausted, soldiers are tired of being sent on multiple deployments, and most just want to come home to their families. Let us bring them home, end this madness.
