As the decade comes to a close, I gotta say this album is right up there, on my list of top albums of the decade, definitely one of my favorite albums of all time. I remember the first time, I heard Damien, it was the video for Volcano, woke up early, and VH1 had their Top 20 countdown in 2003, and that video was on there. It had an impact on me. I just love the sound, its sparse and bare, but its honest, emotional and powerful.

O is one of those records for me at least that conjurs up visions and emotions and feelings, just by playing it. For me, I think of windswept piers, of the coast on a cold grey day, of summers where I had no cares and troubles and where I had no worries. It is able to dredge up my emotions from those years.

I love everything about the album. The songs themselves, the lyrics, the lack of a "huge sound", but the instruments that are there are powerful. The albums as sparse as a barren forest, but at the same time is extravagent with the operatic sounds heard on Eskimo.

What was the impact of the record? Well, it made Damien and Lisa stars, and sort of was the first taste of one of the decades biggest trends, which was the sensitive singer songwriter, the Starbucks sound if you will. Josh Radin, Jason Mraz. Ray Lamontagne, Jonathan Rice, Brett Dennen, Alexi Murdoch, Fionn Regan, even Glen Hansard all talented musicians, who are doing their thing, but all definitely heard O at some point.

Will Damien ever top O? I dont know. But as album number three is nearing, I cant wait to find out.

Around 1999 a pirate station in Dublin used to play "The Professor" a lot, and eventually i saw him playing in a record store near my house. Never forgot him after that, he was a league above the other singer-songwriters in Dublin at the time (and still is).

i really doubt he'll ever make an album this good again. Many of the songs (eg Eskimo, I Remember, Amie) were ones he had written years before in his previous band Juniper (now called Bell X1). So he had years to come up with the final arrangements for the album....tweaking them while busking around Europe and Dublin before settling on final arrangements for the songs. I'll upload the original versions of the songs, it's really interesting to hear the difference. (for any Bell X1 fans the same can be said, half of Music In Mouth was written a decade before it was released).

Anyway, I love the album. I love the horrible bitter attitude in the lyrics. The humanity of it, how we've all felt that selfish and hurt at somepoint in our lives. The recording is incredible, apparently for some songs Vyvienne Long (cello player) would record her parts in the upstairs landing, while Lisa would sing from the bathroom, and Damien & Tom O (drummer) would play in the kitchen, with mics spread around the house.

the graphic lyrics of Amie, the anger in Cheers Darlin, the reality of the last line of Blowers Daughter.... this album truly knocks me on my ass everytime I listen to it!

From my friends Facebook post while she was in Ireland a few days ago:

HOLY SHIT! Stumbled across Glen Hansard on Grafton St today just as he was setting up for a charity busking session with Paddy Casey and Mundy! John & I got prime spots right in front. Damien Rice showed up, then Liam O Maonlai. They played for 1hr45! Then BONO came along and sang 4 songs with the motley crew! Unbelie...vable! Couldn't believe we didn't have a camera/phone/iPod between us!

That would've have been cool :geek:

I was there for this! It fucking was COOL! it was around 6pm on Christmas eve near Stephens Green! (basically the spot where Glen Hansard is busking at the start of "Once"). ..... pretty cool.
Vyvienne Long was there too, playing a violin. 8-) i caught Bono's last song, and then the others played a few more.
