Ok. You never hear McCready's name mentioned with the all-time great, lead guitarists.....
Where do YOU place him? Right there with the Hendrix, Page, Clapton, Van Halen's of the world?
He's definately this band's "secret weapon" but where does he rank all-time?

  • Mike is a great guitar player, but he's not in the same category as the guys you mentioned.

    I wonder why?
I'm not convinced that he belongs with them either but he has blown my mind time and time again...
is he top 25 of all-time? top 50?
  • He was the MVP of the summer '08 tour. Hands down.

who cares what OTHER people think of McCready..

He and PJ are so under the radar, those donkeys at Rolling Stone and what not will never figure it out..

I like keeping him as our little secret..

everytime I share a Mikey solo with a non-fan, its like "who THE HELL is that!!!"

He's great, but I don't even think he's in the Top 25 - probably around 60-70, unless you go by personal taste.

Clapton, Beck, Page, Duane, Garcia, Gilmour, Santana, Hendrix, Van Halen, Iommi, Townshend, Richards, Zappa, Anastasio, Haynes, Trucks, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Morello all come to mind way before him.

Mike is #1. Get over it you technical noodleheads. Nothing is ever the same and he is always on live. Watch Alive on the Immagine dvd and you'll surely agree. This is based on hero worship by the way!! The crowd are completely in his hand for the solo. Which truly rocks I might add. Hendrix was pretty good and I would even say they were similar. There are so many overrated guitarists out there. All hail MM :D

  • I agree, there are a hell of a lot of Overrated guitarists out there. I always wonder why Mike is never mentioned. I've seen over 100 main stream bands live and I would say Mike is in the Top 25

    I'll give Mike his due.......

In terms of guitarists, no other has affected my life the way MM has.
He may not be a technical genius in the same way Jimmy Page is but I've had the opportunity to stand directly in front of him and see his fingers making those incredible sounds and watch his body encompass the music, become the music, and witness the whole fuckin crowd's face melt into a giant pool of sweaty pearl jam.

I maintain any human who leaves a show before the last notes of YLB have cleared the air is a fucking fool.

very underrated. his guitar playing hasn't really been showcased like it was on the first two albums. His live game is what makes him top 50 for me and will always kinda be up there since he got me into guitar playing. motherfucker rocks.
  • I think Mike doesnt get as much credit for a couple of reasons, one because he doesn't write many songs at all. and two because most people think Mike and Stone both get the credit, its very hard to give it all to just Mike.

Sorry guys, Mike is a good guitar player, but you have to be nuts to put him in a category the OP did.

    Top 100? Maybe.

While Mike can play quickly, what he is doing is by not means that technical. He is a pretty simple player who likes to stick to simple blues scales.

What he does, he does well, but what he does doesn't come close to the true greats.

That is all that matters, I say. 8-)
  • although PJ is my favorite band, i've never been overly impressed with Mike

maybe cuz my other favorite band is Phish

wisecracks about drugs and hippies aside, Trey Anastasio's guitar skills are off the fuckin charts

Mike is good, even great, but he is a mere mortal.....Trey is the closest thing i've ever seen to a guitar GOD

  • I don't think he's one of the best guitar players ever. There are too many good ones. He's definitley one of the most creative and underrated though.

    OVERATED

mike is way better than him. So is stone. Stone doesn't get enough credit for what he does.
