A Decade of PJ...by the numbers

As we look back to the past 10 years in the career of Ed, Stone, Jeff, Mike and Matt (and Boom too), a lot can be said. If you guys are anything like me, the past decade flew by with little chance to take stock of what we have witnessed before our eyes. As a Christmas/New Years present to the board, I have taken the time to do some research. What can we take from these numbers? Well, a lot, as I discovered. Let's take a look:

Pearl Jam has played 354 shows, released 4 studio albums, and one compilation of b-sides from 2000-2009. Of the 354 shows played around the world, 209 have been within the United States and 145 have been played worldwide. They have played the East Coast, West Coast, Midwest, the South and even Hawaii. They have played Europe, both Western and Eastern, they have played Canada and Mexico, they have played South America, Australia and the Far East. Don't believe me?

Outside of the United States, they have played (in descending order) Australia and Canada 27x each, England and Germany 10x each, Italy 8x, Mexico and Spain 6x each, Brazil and Japan 5x each, Holland and Portugal 4x each, Argentina/Austria/France/Poland have been played 3x each, Belgium/Chile/Czech Republic/Denmark/Ireland/New Zealand/Switzerland 2x each, and Croatia/Greece/Norway/Scotland/Slovenia/Sweden/Wales have each been graced with PJ's presence once.

Within the United States including Washington DC, they have played (in descending order) California 33x, Washington and New York 17x each, New Jersey and Pennsylvania 13x each, Illinois 12x, Massachusetts 11x, Florida 9x, Ohio and Texas 8x, Michigan 6x, North Carolina 5x, Missouri/Tennessee/Wisconsin 4x each, Colorado/DC/Hawaii/Minnesota/Nevada/Oregon/Virginia 3x each, Connecticut/Georgia/Indiana/Louisiana/Montana 2x each, Idaho/Iowa/Kansas/Kentucky/Maryland/NMexico/NDakota/Oklahoma/SCarolina/Utah got Pearl Jam just once. Finally, our boys did not visit the states of Alaska, Delaware, Maine, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, S. Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming during the decade.

In 2006, the band played 82 shows. In 2003, they played 77 shows. In 2000, it was 75 shows. In 2005 PJ played 39 times. This year, they played 32. 2007 was 15. Both 2008 and 2004 had 13 each. 2002 had only 5 and even fewer were the 3 times PJ graced the stage in 2001.

By month, there were no shows this decade played in the month of January. Zero. February was 11. March was 5, April was 23, May was 28, June was 76, July was 28, August was 38, September was 52, October was 50, November was 31, December was only 12. In April 2003 and June 2000, they played a whopping 21 shows for the month!

All of these numbers have been checked and double checked using the setlists from the PJ.com main page.

So there you have it. 10 years. 354 shows. 40 states (41 with DC). 29 countries. A million memories.

  • If their career can be broken up into two halves, the 90's the band was in relative infancy, while the 00's they have grown together and have evolved into the greatest band in the world. They stretched themselves and what they could be as a band. We all reaped the benefits.

  • I thought it was interesting that their two biggest months of the decade were September and October. In a blind taste test of all PJ fans out there, 99% I bet would have said June and July were their biggest touring months.

  • A lot of this we already knew. They love UK and Germany. They love California. Also, all these people saying PJ ignores states like Texas...they played 8 times! As for the comment by spat, why not have a tour of the forgotten states? I agree. I heard Nebraska is just gorgeous this time of year. Better yet, make it a January tour!

  • Just saw this thread, pretty cool facts. I would love if they played a tour, but made sure they hit up every state. And fan club members from the particular sate would get 1st dibs on tix, then the rest of the fan club members.

They states unfortunately :cry: have never seen Pearl Jam change their listening habits:
Delaware, New Hampshire, West Virginia, Alaska and Mississipi

Pearl Jam has only played these unfortunate states but 1 time
Vermont 1 time - 11-2-91 Burlington; University Of Vermont - Memorial Auditorium, Rhode Island 1 time - 11-13-91 Warwick, Rocky Point Palladium, North Dakota 1 time - 2003-06-15; Fargo, Fargo Dome; South Dakota 1 time - 6-24-98 Rapid City; Rushmore Civic Center Arena; Maine 1 time - 9-26-96 Augusta; Civic Center; Idaho 1 time - 11-03-00 Nampa (Boise)

Well, I guess 2 is better than one as this goes:
    Arkansas 2 times - Little Rock 1993 & 2003; Iowa 2 times - Ames 1991 & Council Bluffs in 2003; Nebraska 2 times - Omaha in 1991 & 1992; Kentucky 2 times - Lexington in 2003 & Louisville 1994; Alabama 2 times - Birmingham in 2003 & 1998;

Oklahoma & Kansas 3 times, may be other with 3, got to lazy and cut it off at this point.

Haha, yeah, tour Alaska in January! Make sure its an outdoor gig while you're at it! Well, I guess if the Alaska Aces and their ECHL rivals can get in and out of Anchorage ok during the season, then surely Pearl Jam could pull it off!

Love the stats! Great stuff! I can easily see why California is played the most, haha! For reals though, I have a hard time leaving, is there a better place out there?

I have seen the band 14 times, 13x in the past 10 years, in one state, California, in 7 different cities, 6 in the past 10 years... thats enough, haha!
