Sick Kids

How bad is this? My 2 yr old has a 101 degree fever, vomiting, coughs, sweats, whines, cries, and is just overall miserable. As a dad this breaks my heart. Besides medicines and lots of hugs and words of encouragement, there is nothing I can do for him. I called the doctor and he said as long as the temp doesn't go over 103, there is no need to come in. Just give him reccomended doses of childrens tylenol and wait for it to pass. So all day today he has been moping and crying cause he feels sick. It absolutely kills me to see him like this. He just fell asleep on the stairs on his way up to his room. I brought him up and tucked him in and hopefully he gets some restful sleep. I guess I'm just venting. I know there are so many other kids out there that have it worse than him so I know I am lucky. Just hate to see him like this.

  • I imagine your doctor won't know a thing about this, but administering Vitamin D works like magic curing fever!

Fevers in small children are scary to witness, but they are almost never dangerous. Fevers are a sign that the immune system is working well: The hotter the body gets, the more germs die from the heat. Drugs like acetaminophen will lower a fever, but do absolutely nothing about the bacteria/viruses thriving in the child. A powerful immune booster like Vitamin D will help the body fight germs, and fever naturally subsides because the invaders are dying off.

So Vitamin D in this case can be an actual cure for fever. Tylenol masks that symptom of infection which we see as a fever.

Sick children - years from now your son will remember your caring
my daughter years ago had terrible ear infections- that incredible pain,we as adults forget this but ear pain is most awful, we would be up all night. One night we put on Cinderella and I held her with the heating pad. She is now almost 24 and remembers this. Through all the bad times there is bonding. You are a very good parent to be there for your child.

Wow. I didn't know that. Hopefully he is better tomorrow but if not I will try that.

Thank you for the kind words. I hope that one day he will remember this. There is no greater gift you can give to your kids than love and caring.

I think you're thinking of Vitamin C, which is an immune booster. Vitamin D promotes healthy bones and skin I believe. Not to say it does nothing for your immune systems because I think all vitamins are good for you. Tylenol is equally important to take however because of the fact it reduces the fever. I doubt the doctor was suggesting it would cure the kid of his flu. Either way neither is a "cure", they just aid the body in fighting the bacteria.

In regards to the fever part, if my kids get a temperature, and they seem not TOO bad with it - I'll leave off the medicines, as somebody before mentioned, a temp is good because it kills the germs.

Though saying that, if they get to be quite unsettled with it,then I'll give em a dose.

I hope your child gets better soon! Best of luck :)

    actually, no.
in fact, i was just reading about this the other day; we all mistakenly believe loading up on vitamin C will help us avoid/recover from cold or flu, but the evidence is inconclusive on that. however, vitamin D has been correlated with cold/flu avoidance and recovery. read up, most interesting! i think i was reading about it in the january issue of real simple, but it's not the first time i've heard about it. i am unsure about children and dosages, but i know it's highly recommended for adults, and particularly women.

    I definitely meant Vitamin D.

Tylenol is important in a bad way: It reduces an infection-fighting fever but leaves the infection intact. Tens of thousands of people die every year from acetaminophen. Tylenol does not fight bacteria.

Vitamins can be cures when they help the immune system kill an infection. Yes, the person needs to have a functioning immune system: The body heals itself, with the right tools, such as energy, nutrients, etc.

(This is a bit off-topic, but I recently read an article where an MD claimed, "There is no scientific basis for the belief that the body heals itself."
Wow!!! So if only drugs can cure, what the hell do our immune systems do? Every time I get a cut or a bruise, and do nothing about it, it heals on its own.... Hmmm.... I must be hallucinating. It's just a "belief.")

So sorry for your little boy, he sounds like a trooper through it though. I'm sure evidence of Santa being in his home will make him feel better. ;)
