CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chris Henry has died, one day after suffering serious injuries upon falling out of the back of a pickup truck in what authorities describe as a domestic dispute with his fiancee.

Police say Henry died at 6:36 a.m. Thursday. Henry was 26.

Away from the team because of a broken forearm, Henry was rushed to the hospital Wednesday after being found on a residential road. Police say a dispute began at a home about a half-mile away, and Henry jumped into the bed of the truck as his fiancee was driving away from the residence.

Police said at some point when she was driving, Henry "came out of the back of the vehicle."

Henry is engaged to Loleini Tonga, and the couple has been raising three children. Tonga's MySpace page identifies herself as "Mrs. C. Henry" and has a picture of her next to a person who appears to be Henry. She also has a post from Tuesday talking about buying wedding rings.

Neighbor Karen Clanton said the Tonga family lives in the house where the police say the incident began, adding that she didn't witness it and that "they're nice folks."

There were tire tracks on the front lawn Wednesday.

Henry broke his left forearm Nov. 8 during a win over Baltimore. He had surgery and was placed on season-ending injured reserve following the game. Charlotte is home to Tonga's parents.

The Bengals (9-4) lead the AFC North and play host to the San Diego Chargers on Sunday
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

  • What a waste of talent...

Sad story for his family and friends, but the guy was an asshole. He probably would have been in prison if he wasn't a pro athlete.

I feel bad for his children.

don't say shit like that. being from Cincinnati i can say that most of his time here I did not like the guy at all. but also being from Cincy I can tell you that he was really starting to turn his life around, and he was very grateful for what he had now and for the 2nd 3rd and 4th chances he was given to play football.
he finally "got it" last season. now for this to happen. it's tragic.

he may have made bad choices in the past, but I think most of us have. to call him an asshole is a dick move IMO.

    RIP # 15

Ok, maybe "troubled" instead of and asshole... But he would have been in prison if he wasn't a professional athlete. Drunk driving, firearms, assaults, marijuana charges... that is more bad choices than probably anyone on this board.

  • I really don't understand why people say such stupid things about others when they die. The man is dead. There's really not much worse that can happen to him now. Why shit on him?

I agree with this but let's not also make him out to be a saint because he died either.

not a saint by all means. he surronded himself with the wrong people when he made it to the NFL. those people were gone from his life as of last year, and you could really see him turning things around.

i would never call him a saint, he was misguided though. anyone who has actually met him, never had a bad thing to say about him.

i don't know. maybe being from cincy i'm too sensitive to this.

I don't think anyone is mistaking him for the Pope or anything. He's just gone at 26. There's really no need to bash him any further. It hasn't even been 5 fucking hours ago, you know?
  • real sad - 26 is so young. So much time to change the way people view you. I am happy that he had "turned it around" before he died.

I saw his injury of the field and I knew right away he had broken his forearm. It must have been very painful, so sad. However atleast he gave it his all on his final play.

    RIP very tragic.

I love the theory of 'he surrounded himself with bad people' - convenient excuse to act like a jackass and say it's not your own fault. isn't it possible some of these guys are the bad people and are bringing their friends down with them? again not bashing him particularly, just stating let's not glorify him or make him out to be something he wasn't because he died. he was a good football player and it is a shame when anyone dies, but let's not go overboard.

He was a young immature kid who ran into millions of dollars and did some dumb shit. I could only imagine how stupid I would have been if I had that money at 20, 21, 22 years old. From everything I have read he was turning his life around and he has not been in trouble for a while.

Who gives a fuck if he made some mistakes, now is not the time to talk about. The fact of the matter is that 3 kids lost their father, someone lost their fiance, many family members and friends lost someone really close to them, and the Bengals lost a good friend and player.

Seemed like he was taking advantage of his last chance and it's sad that the story wont have a happy ending.

he booted his "friends" after his last brush with the law. he had said that he did not do what he was accused of, and that it was someone else in his "group" and when not one of his "friends" stepped up to clear him but still hung onto him because of his "status" he finally saw through them. after he was suspended from the NFL they bailed on him. when he was reinstated they all tried continue where they left off, and he put a stop to it.
he said he now knew who his real friends were and who really cared about him. he had not been in any trouble since then. I do think that some of these guys are "bad people" I just don't think that was the case with him.
misguided yes, bad person ... No.
whatever, I'm not going to argue about it because that won't change anything.
and I dont think anyone here is going "overboard" at all. we are saying he was a great talent, and led what turned out to be a somewhat tragic life. I don't think I'm "glorifying" him at all.

    peace.
    Peace, Love.

Yeah, looks like he had his shit together.
Chasing his fiance during a domestic dispute, jumped in the back of the pick up as she drove away.
911 report says he was banging on the cab window trying to break it and get at her.
Imagine if he would have caught her.
Somethings don't change. The end result is not surprising considering his past history.
He was in trouble even at West virginia.
    This isn't sad.
I'm willing to bet he wasn't even that good of a father.
    Get real.
