Dying

Now I lay me down to sleep

Let me die before I wake

Give me peace if only in death

Please take away my last breath

Let me fade into the night

Hopefully heading into the light

Make the life ooze from my veins

Erasing the marks of life’s strain

Allow my bodies warmth to dissipate

Fading into death I anticipate

Losing consciousness will come to pass

And I will be dead at last.

I have worked as a critical care nurse for twenty one years and I have seen some people suffer a great deal. This poem represents allowing people with chronic illness to decide when they no longer wish treatment. I believe that people should not suffer unnecessarily. There is an expression in the medical field: “We are not saving a life, we are prolonging their suffering.”

  • I totally agree...I watched my Mother suffer and would never wish that upon anyone...wouldn't it be nice just to go to sleep and not wake up!
  • I agree. Letting go of those we love is very difficult but in some cases the most loving gesture we have to give. Providing comfort care and love in their final hours is the last monumental support we can offer.

that whole thing with the reply's just made my stomach hollow and sink,
I,m almost 50 and the reality of that very subject has gotton closer to home
on a few occasion's in the last few year's, the saddest of it all is to see kid's
loose a battle and the desperation in their parents eye's, my dear friend's are going through
this with their 7 year old,I still cry when I think too much about it,my wife and
I pry for her to pull through the cancer.
the little girl is tuff, tuffer than me for sure.

  • I understand how you feel. I have noticed the patients I care for are sometimes younger than my current age. A constant reminder we are all againg each day. I lost my brother last summer at the age of 49 to cancer. Although very difficult it was very therapeutic for me to have the opportunity to keep him as comfortable as possible. It was the most I could offer him. Comfort and love.
