Larry Bird-Magic Johnson book

As someone who was in single digits during the height of their encounters in the NBA finals, I've been waiting to read a book about it from their perspective. I just started it this week and so far I'm enjoying it immensely. Anyone else read it or reading it?

Been a huge NBA fan since my days as a young tike....I was born in 88...unfortunately I missed the Bird/Johnson era....but was present for Barkley, Jordan, Olajuwan, Drexler, Shaq, Kemp, Rodman etc., I feel that I am still fortunate. :)

I'm from Utah, born and raised...never have I experienced excitement like those back-to-back finals of the Jazz and the Bulls....what great playoffs.

I very much miss watching Stockton and Malone play.

What's the title on this book, xavier?

It's called "When the game was ours". It was written by Jackie MacMullan, who was around those Celtic teams working out of Boston and around the NBA.

As someone who attended game 1 of the 1981 finals at age 10 (Celts 99 - Rockets 96, I believe) ... I'll certianly be picking this up at some point.

  • People on this board have a knack for making me feel so old!;)

Ahem, I was in my 30s for most of the 80s. :shifty: Those were some great days for basketball.
I've seen some reviews of this book and it looks like a great read. Maybe over the holidays.

I was just messing with you. :P I actually enjoy this stage in my life.
I live near Dallas, which of course finally got a pro team in the 80s.
Man, did the Mavericks suck!
The only thing to be said for them was when another team came to town and (if you could afford the tickets) you got to see some of the greats of the day: Julius Irving, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird. I didn't go much. It was out of my price range but I loved watching games on tv. I was a big time Bird fan. I swear, that man could float on air.

I know we don't talk about Kareem Abdul-Jabar here  but I remember watching him back when I was in high school when he was still Lew Alcindor. It might have been in the 90s that the Lakers were in Dallas for a game and his house had burned down the day before in one of those California brush fires. When he was introduced at the beginning of the game the Dallas crowd gave him a standing ovation.
*edit* The man retired in 89 so it must have been the year before that. The memory really starts slipping when you get my age.

well i'm not as ancient as ms princess ;) i've been a laker fan since i was born...when they moved to la, my parents bought season tix so i went to many games in the 70's...then they drafted magic, the ticket prices went up and my folks dropped the tix :( ...i can still picture the tickets to game 7 of the 1980 finals in the trash can...they weren't needed of course since the lakers took care of the sixers in 6 but it was emblematic to me that i could have spent my teenage years going to the showtime lakers...regardless, i still went to many games at the forum...what a time it was :D

in 1982, the lakers were holding their pre season camp at the college of the desert near palm springs...my dad had a job down there and one day he and i went to visit his job...on the way home, he said 'let's stop by and see if we can watch practice'...i thought he was nuts but he managed to get us into a closed practice...i got jerry west's and chick hearn's autograph's and not only did i get magic's autograph but a picture with him

    ....

that would be were i'd post it for all to see but alas my dumbass lost it years ago

for a 11-12 year old it was the greatest moment of my life (and still is :D )
  • Norm, that is too cool! :D
BTW very few people are as ancient as the princess. ;)

another story, the 1987 finals, game 4...my friend had to work that night and his boss wouldn't allow him to have a tv or radio on so he called me and i called magic's game winning baby hook...not as well as chick but i definitely gave him a great description of a classic laker/celtic moment! :D

this book is GREAT! read it on the plane to and from new york last week

i think this book should be required reading for all current and future nba players (lebron i'm looking at you)...bird and magic but especially bird wanted nothing else than to win...money, fame didn't matter...just winning the championship and kicking the ass of their opponents :D
