Dean urges defeat of emerging health care bill

WASHINGTON – Former Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean argued Wednesday that the health care overhaul bill taking shape in the Senate further empowers private insurers at the expense of consumer choice.

"You will be forced to buy insurance. If you don't, you'll pay a fine," said Dean, a physician. "It's an insurance company bailout." Interviewed on ABC's "Good Morning America," he said the bill has some good provisions, "but there has to be a line beyond which you think the bill is bad for the country."

"This is an insurance company's dream," the former Democratic presidential candidate said. "This is the Washington scramble, and it's a shame."

Dean asserted that the Senate's health care bill would not prohibit insurance companies from denying coverage for preexisting conditions and he also said it would allow the industry to charge older people far more than others for premiums.

Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., a prominent House liberal, protested the absence of any government-run insurance option in the Senate bill.

"We can't let the perfect be enemy of the good," Weiner said on CBS' "Early Show," "but we are reaching a tipping point."

When House and Senate negotiators go to conference to work out a compromise bill, Weiner said, "We should move away from some of the things the Senate has done and move back to where the House is. You need to contain cost. You do that with a public option."

(This version CORRECTS SUBS 2nd graf, deleting word 'now' to correct Dean quote.)

Interesting. I am for everyone having access to health insurance, but I am not sure if we are going about it the right way.

Did he scream his signature "YEEEEEEEEEEEAH" after his quote??
Since i work for one of the major insurance companies, I'm kind of on the fence about a national health plan. I think there needs to be one But the government really needs to think about all options and not just pass a bill to pass a bill.

Never thought I'd find myself agreeing with Howard Dean. We definitely don't need anymore bailouts, and we especially don't need to be mandated to buy health insurance.

He's absolutely right. It's the Insurance industry's wet dream come true. They're the only ones making out if this bill passes.

And he's not the only Dem against it. So is Dennis Kucinich who has said plenty.

yes fuck this bill! let it die, and start it over from scratch... and while you are at it, will someone please punch joe lieberman in the face about 50 times for gutting the bill in the senate?

  • I was scrolling through the bill looking for the section about fines/punishments. After 500 pages I hadn't found it (I used the search feature, also useless.) But I stumbled across the paragraph that said people with serious long term illnesses would be forcibly counselled every X amount of months about stopping their medical care.

"You are too expensive, please die!"
"May you live in interesting times."

Some where someone refered to this Counseling as "Death Panels".....are you sure it's in there?... because I have read on the MT that that is crazy! and fear mongering!

I'm about as non-partisan as it gets, because I actually can't stand either side if I'm being honest. But I have to question, why are Democrats so anxious about getting this thing passed? I don't believe there is that much public support for it, and if anything I believe they may be putting their political careers at risk by pushing this thing so hard. It's pretty obvious Republicans have no desire to pass this legislation, but yet the Dems seem to be trying everything in their power to get this thing through by Christmas. It seems as though most of us agree that this abortion of a bill would actually benefit the big insurance companies alone. So would this mean that the Dems are aligning themselves with the special interests of big insurance companies?

indeed he has. he makes a whole lot of sense.

I read it in the actual bill, thank you.
It was not as dramatic as a Death Panel deciding who lives and who dies. It was only about making it law that patients be advised to consider their options.

My post had nothing to do with other threads on A Moving Train, what is or is not considered crazy, or any type of mongering. I did not see the Health Care bill on this forum, I went to an actual government website.

Sorry I thought you meant if they cut off there medical care that would be the same as saying..."You are too expensive, please die!"...which sounds like somthing a death panel would be thinking....which makes me wonder who would do the Counseling.

I think a lot of people aren't really reading what's in store with the bill, and just want something to change. I've talked to some people (who are Dems) and they seem to think that any change is good change, that this is a start in the right direction.

I think you nailed it. So many people think that any change is good, but that is quite possibly the worst attitude to have in many ways. I think most people associate Republicans (rightly so in many cases) with big business and special interests. Yet here they are going against what would be VERY beneficial to one of the biggest industries in this country. If they were in the pocket of the big insurance companies you can bet this bill would pass like shit through a goose. On the other hand, the Democrats are practically using covert tactics to get this thing passed as quickly as humanly possible. Again, if this is going to benefit the insurance industry, and most Americans are opposed to it, why the hell are the Dems trying so hard to get it passed?
