  • The most uplifting song on the album. My 4 year old daughter asks me everytime we hop in the car to put on her 3 favourites, which are Just Breathe, Amomgst The Waves and Unthought Known. My 2 year old daughter is also asking for them.

One of my favorites, I never get tired of listening to that song.

ATW doesnt hold a candle to older PJ songs in the same vein, and is unbelievably paint-by-the-numbers. a real dissappointment. With the cheesy surfing lyrics, it just doesnt have the weight of a truly great epic like GTF or Alive.

    sorry. IMO

    Great opinion
Of course it does not compare to Give 2 Fly or Alive or Evolution or SuperSonic = those are "those types of songs"
Amongst The Waves is slicker than that - these songs all PearlJam songs are like onions, they got layers ("cake!!! what about cake?!?!? a cake has layers!!)
Try listening to it again with headphones on in the dark... kinda like zero sensory input except the song
    Ed is saying
    "Gotta say it now
    Better loud
Than too late" He has overcome it all and is enjoying the now - as we should while listening to this gem.

It's very refreshing, it reminds me of surfing, though I never have, and suppose it's too late to start at 36?

Nope...I just started and I'm 38. I was learning when Backspacer came out and I would blast Amongst The Waves in my truck while I was driving down to San Onofre every Friday morning at dawn for my morning session.

    F'ing amazing.

Listen to the song...then go surf. Nothing better!

spectacular........I cannot get over how good this song really is.

    And you know why...?

Because its written by the one and only Stone Gossard 8-)

He's the strongest writer in PJ and should get more of his songs on records.

In fact I don't understand the hate for Backspacer. It's everything that Avocado failed to be IMO.

  • AMT is def. my favorite song off of Backspacer (although every song is great in my opinion)
  • it really is just terrible. a pale imitation of their old greats. Given to Fly by way of soft adult contemporary rock.

    completely vapid lyrics :
'save the tears that are waterfallin, lets go swim tonight darlin' ?

i think i just threw up in my mouth a little bit. come on. They are capable of so much more! (Of The Earth!)

Amongst the Waves is a great love song.

Unthought Known is still my favorite song on the album though. IMO Unthought Known is one of the best Pearl Jam songs ever.

I think you should probably get your ears checked then as it's a great song.

I am hot and cold with this one.
I don't mind the first verse and chorus, not really crazy about, but it's allright. Than the song starts to bother me, it is like droning that takes too long, and 'cut to later' part with next few lines is unlistenable to me. After 'Survived' line I like it again, but not guitar solo, and, finally, I love Ed's singing and guitars picking up at the end - my favourite part.
I like it better with video, it softens song a bit IMO.

Agreed. This is a very pedestrian song, by Pearl Jam's standards.

The song definitely has a cheese factor, but since day one, it's been my most played Pearl Jam song on Backspacer.

I love it, and cheese is healthy in moderation.

Although not as dark and edgy as previous efforts, Backspacer is still kicking my ass and it's a great workout album and mood lifter. They need to write more punchy music!

    Agreed.

I don't care what anyone else thinks, I love this song and would absolutely rank it up there with songs like Given To Fly and In Hiding. I feel pretty much the same about Unthought Known.

Cool... I've also thought of this song as being in the same realm as "Given to Fly" or "In Hiding," in terms of its vibe and emotion..."Amongst the Waves" is great!

This song would be a lot better if it had more teeth (ala given to fly). Namely by letting mike cut loose a bit for the solo. That's the only way to shake the dentist waiting room vibe the song gives off.
