Hi all,

Let me start off by saying I am an absolute beginner to the world of gutiaring, but I am really keen and I'm thinking of lashing out and buying an electric guitar.

So I'll be starting from scratch and I may have the opportunity of buying a second hand Fender Stratocaster MIM (one year old) and Roland Cube 15X for around $650 aussie dollars. I guess the questions I have are does this price sound resonable? Is this guitar OK for a beginner like me or should I go something else? Should I try and stretch the buget a little further and go for something a little better (in particular the amp)?

Some pictures of the gear:

What do you guys think? Sorry in advance for the stupid questions, like I said I'm a total noob and have nobody else to turn to....

Cheers  :)

  • Well, you can't really go wrong with a mexico strat as a beginner. That's a pretty decent guitar that will keep you afloat for quite a while. As I understand this is the humbucker version, that might even be a little better for a beginner who's still looking for his tone as they are slightly more versatile.
As for the amp, I'm not so sure. That's a pretty small amp that would be pretty much useless for anything other than bedroom practice. So if you're gonna join a band at some point, you'll have to look for something a little bigger, I'm afraid. I'd advice everyone to invest a little more for a decent amp, cause at least to me the amp sound is more important to a good starting tone, that will keep you exited and practicing, than a better guitar. There's a lot of pretty decent and inexpensive little tube practice amps out there nowadays.
  • Thanks heaps for the advice, I really appreciate it.

I think you're right, the guitar should suit me well as a beginner, and most of all I like the styling and will want to play it daily!

As for the amp, I might just go with this one as well for now, it will only be for tinkering around at home.

The plan would be to upgrade once (if??!!) my playing gets better over time.

Once again cheers, you have definitely made me confident it will suit my needs :)
