Conserve Ed's Voice - Songs to Retire

Hey,

Don't get me wrong here, Ed still has great pipes but they honestly seem to be showing a little wear and tear (I mean c'mon, the guy is in his mid forties and smokes). When I listen to my boots from 2003 compared with the 2009 boots there is a noticeable difference. With that in mind, despite the fact I love this songs, I think that it should be officially retired from live shows for the long term sake of Ed's voice. Anybody agree?? If so, what other songs really carry alot of vocal strain?

Love Reign O'er Me

Ain't it funny when things change so much, it's all state of mind?

I love all the sharks in here. It is exactly because I LOVE his voice that I made the thread. Songs like Love Reign just tear the guys throat apart. I am willing to live without that song for the sake of the long term sustainability of his pipes. Yeah, his job is to sing......If I were a mover I wouldn't lift with my back all day or I would be out of work on disability........singing Love Reign over Me is like lifting a piano with your back!!!

They seem to be doing a good job of resting Ed's vocal cords by not touring anywhere near as much as they used to. 2007 was a short touring year, 2008 was nowhere near as big a US tour as in the past, same with 2009 and can't see 2010 being much different. Not wanting to be away from their families is the cited reason for this, but it's not going to be doing Ed's voice any harm either.

Blood isn't that good anyways.. its gotta go.

He could also do without the scream at the beginning of Breakerfall. Love that song, but only like the distorted scream on the album. It always fucks up the first lines for him.

Lukin needs to go or be changed too. Sorry. :)

Really Ed should just stop smoking, but that ain't my business. I'm grateful for what he's given us so far..

Are you insulted? I'm confused. Please don't be so sensitive.

Love Ed's voice, but some songs destroy his voice and suck now. Really he couldn't even pull them off way back when. Just those studio cuts where he had a chance to rest and perfect..They really could do less of them. He's only human.

Whatever Ed decides to do to his voice is his business I guess and yeah I do wish he would stop smoking
too but only to secure the next 10 years recording and touring. Whatever happens though he's given us almost 2 decades of the best music and will go down as one of the greats. I personally love to hear Blood, Comatose, Last Exit, etc and it's not a PJ set without the odd one. It was the lack of that type of song that made Backspacer not quite a classic for me. Listen to some of the old versions of Blood and compare them to the Immagine dvd version, if he's lost anything it's not much. 30 song sets are a bigger killer but who ever moans about that!

Mick Hucknall conserves his voice. End of thread.
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

No, it is not retarded. It is a good thread. It is a fact that Ed has trouble with some of the harder, faster songs. I'd rather hear a solid mid-tempo song than hear him strain his voice through Blood.

He can do what he wants though.

    Maybe do a 'Slow' Lukin...lol
  • Leave the man alone. Do you realize how much joy Ed gets out of singing Love, Reign O'er Me?
He crafts most of the setlists for every show. If he feels like singing a particular tune that night, then he's going to do it. Who cares if he smokes? If you're concerned about his second hand smoke, don't go to the show.

I don't know how ANYONE old or young can sing DTE the way Ed does. It hurts my throat just listening to it on my ipod! I would hate to never hear it live again, so I cannot support this cause...

Definitely would NEVER want to see Eddie limit himself vocally. Yes his voice has changed a great deal since the early days (20 years ago) but in some ways its never been better!!! I was listening to the Gibson 10/07 bootleg last night and was amazed with "Animal". Sounds like its 1993 all over again. I believe Eddie could still hit any range vocally that he could in the 90's. The question is, would he want to? The only thing I'd like to see Eddie do is quit smoking in order to stop the "Robert Plant Factor" (as I like to call it) from happing. Smoking has killed Plants voice.
