Very sad. The White Stripes would be a pretty good choice. But maybe Billboard awards go by album sales.

Nickelback is the top group of the decade, according to Billboard magazine.
Rapper Eminem has been named the top artist of the decade, and 'N Sync garnered the title album of the decade for its bestselling No Strings Attached (2000).
Nickelback was the highest-ranking band of the decade, only finishing behind solo artists Eminem, 50 Cent, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Nelly and Usher, for overall impact and importance.
Despite a distinct lack of critical acclaim, the rock band formed in Hanna, Alta., has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide. In the last decade, it released The State (2001), Silver Side Up (2001), The Long Road (2003), All the Right Reasons (2005) and Dark Horse (2008), which has garnered them a 2010 Grammy nomination for best hard-rock performance for the track Burn It To The Ground.
"We've just accepted that we're never going to be the critics' darlings, and we're OK with that," frontman Chad Kroeger told Billboard in 2007.
But it's not only music reporters who disagree with Billboard magazine's assertion.
Readers of the U.K.'s Word Magazine recently voted Nickelback the worst band in the world, with Kroeger and company locking down an impressive 20 per cent of the vote. Looks like not everyone is a fan of greasy, bleached hair and enlightening, philosophical song titles such as Something in Your Mouth and S.E.X.
Sample lyrics: "Maybe in the parking lot / Better bring your friend along / Better rock together / Than just one at a time / S is for the simple need / E is for the ecstasy / X is just to mark the spot / 'Cause that's the one you really want."
From top group of the decade to worst band in the world — only Nickelback could be so polarizing

It's impressive that they can still get those sales. Nobody buys albums. :( :( :(
or
Most people that are really into music steal it.
The White Stripes!

People that listen to Nickelback are a bunch of low browed troglodytes that don't know how to steal it...just a thought.
Who would you choose as the band of the decade?
For me it have to say RUSH after a 5 year layoff: 3 world tours 3 live DVD's, 3 live cd's, 2 studio albums+ cover album FEEDBACK
Best of ALL no induction to that Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

In all honesty, though, if I had to choose a "band of the decade" I would go with Radiohead. Everything from Kid A (2000), to the great experiment, In Rainbows, has had a great influence on the music scene and have been hailed both critically and commercially. I believe Thom Yorke was even referenced as the "6th most important person in the music industry" back in 2001 or something by one source.
Jesus, it must have been the sad decade of the worst mainstream music EVER :!:
I mean, look at those names and think about their songs...whiners and douches...they are simply fuckin terrible, Alicia Keys is gifted but her songs suck as well...Maybe Nickelback is the least worst of them, and this fact says it all!!!

^^^ This. I would like to know how they define their metrics for determining "best" anything. Other than that I will immediately forget this even happened upon hitting the submit button.
Nickelback = Failure of the decade.
6/12/08 - Tampa, FL

9/04/11 - East Troy, WI - PJ20 - Night 2
It's pretty fucking sad, isnt it?
I'm never going back again.
then there is no subjective way to come up with their list
is it not Nickelback sold the most albums from 2000-2009 then any other band?

but I value my balls to much.
They are the epitomy of terrible music.
My shit floating in the toilet water has more talent than Nickleback.
I would wipe my ass with their CD cover but I don't for 2 reasons:
1. I don't own a nickleback CD
2. I value my ass too much.

Radiohead immediately came to mind ... as did Coldplay. Say what you want, they had a huge decade and all their albums fell perfectly in the 2000s (whereas OK Comupter was what, '97/98? If that was in the 2000s, there'd be zero doubt).
White Stripes is a good call, but, the end of the decade would probably hurt them a bit.
The Arcade Fire could have made a run for it if they had a killer 3rd album, but, no way they get a vote with only 2 albums.
My dark horse (kind of my favorite for the overall decade), The Decemberists ... 5 fantastic albums with a killer EP in The Tain.
It's late, I'm sure someone will list a no brainer that I've missed tomorrow.
"I don't believe in damn curses. Wake up the damn Bambino and have me face him. Maybe I'll drill him in the ass." --- Pedro Martinez
Not that I am a huge fan, although I do have all their albums.
The reason I wouldn't pick Radiohead is because to me a band of the decade has to come to prominence during the decade, and they were well known long before the year 2000 hit. That's just how I feel about it, not saying I'm right or wrong, just saying.
Magazines give these pseudo awards to bands to either keep in check with, what they think, is the general opinion of middle class Britain/America/wherever and are basically sucking up to the status quo. Either that or, to appear as though they've got their finger firmly on the pulse of music, they laud the lesser known bands and discuss them as if they were discovered personally by their editor.
I listen to what I like and I like what I listen to.
