Portishead

Portishead have a new track they recorded for Amnesty International ("Chase the Tear") and Geoff Barrow has eluded to a new album in 2010.
Their first two albums are personal classics but Third just fell flat for me, even though it got good reviews - Beth doesn't seem to be letting loose vocally the way she used to. I thought they may have been wrapped up as a band (what with Geoff's BEAK> project), but apparently they still have something to say.
Thoughts?

That's interesting you say that about Third. Before Third came out, I had never listened to Portishead but I heard good things about the band and the album so I decided to check it out. That album blew me away. I went back and bought the first two, and I liked them, but not near as much as Third. That album was hypnotizing.

Personally, I wasn't crazy about Third, but I didn't dislike it either. I haven't listened to it in almost a year. I will go back and listen to it again to see if it hits me differently than the first few times I listened to it. I still throw PNYC in from time to time and listen while I'm cleaning.
I did the same. There have been a lot of albums that didn't do anything for me at first, so I put it away for 6 or 9 months, then I dust it off and it finally clicks. Unfortunately Third didn't do that for me...
"The Rip" is a great song. In fact it keeps me trying for the rest of the album. And there are a few other tracks that don't bug the shit out of me, but most of them just sound like they're making noise in lieu of music.
It is encouraging that they tried to do something different, but it didn't work for me. I don't want them to just rehash their old sound, so hopefully a new album will be somewhere in the middle. I'm willing to give them the benefit of my doubt.
Third was probably my album of 2008.
It does take a few listens but if you haven't got it by the 3rd or fourth it's probably not going to click. Dummy and the S/T became dinner party albums and what you'd call a coffee table album like Zero 7 etc but I'd like to see someone stick 3rd on as an unobtrusive dinner party soundtrack.
