the haze

the snow did not last
but the wind and the cold had stayed
she said "I love you"
but he could taste her disdain
from across the room

he stood at the window
lost in thought and uncomfortable with his own reflection
uneasy in his own skin

the wind picked up the leaves
and tossed them at the window
just inches from his face

"I love you too"
he said absentmindedly
looking out into the haze
at birds who flew in circles
just 10 feet off the ground
tethered to a pole with chains
going to their feet

"I love you too"

    wrote this back in December. guess I could tell even then that things were not great a month before she even left.
