In praise of Mike

You know, I was just thinking about that part on the Immagine in Cornice DVD where Mike comes out the hotel and all those people are standing around waiting for autographs and he's so nice to everyone, signing all their stuff and posing for pictures. Then he's in the car, talking about hiding and trying to get autographs from the Scorpians when he was young, and he got blown off by one of the guys but not the other. It just made me realize that not only is Mike a fine musician, but he's also an excellent human being. He could be arrogant and self-centered and instead he's humble and thoughtful.

def agree on this one! i really got the feeling as i watched this segment of IIC that Mike was a genuinely nice guy who wanted to make sure that his fans knew he appreciated them.

i think Mike may be one of the (if not the) most humbled guys in the band.

It kind of seems like he's always been that way, too. On this clip of the band accepting their Grammy for StBC, the very last thing it occurs to Ed to say is "Thanks", but Mike right away is so nice, saying hi to his folks and thanking OTHER bands.

Absolutely! Like on Live At The Garden when he's introduced to that guy at the baseball stadium and the guy asks Mike what he does. Something like...
GUY: So what do you do Mike?
MIKE: (real casual) I play guitar for Pearl Jam.
GUY: (not really paying attention) Oh, cool.

I haven't chatted with any of the band besides Mike- but my impression is that even as while they are great musicians and have bazillions of fans- P.J. is just one part of their life & their other concerns and interests keeps them grounded and centered.

Its kinda ironic- because living in the Seattle area, all my life & meeting & knowing people including musicians who were aiming at the big time ( and some got there for a while), I know a few who are so egotistical and impressed with themselves that they distance the people who appreciate their music( and appall their friends). Im not saying they are bad musicians, some of them are very good and they have contributed to their groups success.

On the whole I can say that this area has more down to earth celebrities than not- but the connectedness Pearl Jam has with their fans brings it to another level.

  • Agree 1000%. I have been fortunate to run into Mike a few times while milling about Seattle. No talk of PJ, impending records, autographs, etc. Just "How ya doing..good to see you." and light coversation. Really down to Earth. He seems to be in a real good place these days.

  • Although all the band members are really nice people, I have to agree that MIKE is by far the nicest one.
When they came to Brazil, he took a walk in the streets in almost every city they toured like a completly ordinary person ... giving autographs and posing for photos.

This guy is one of the nicest musicians I've ever known.

  • Mike truly is a great guy, I've met him twice (in 98) and both times he was so nice, he even waited for me to get my camera going properly so i could get my photo taken with him, which i thought was really great and MOST DEFINITLEY appriciated!!! :):)

  • I did want to interject that while I think Mike may be the most gregarious and friendly member of the band- & I appreciate all the time and energy he puts out, I wouldn't say that someone who doesn't do that is a stuck-up prick. :p

Some people get energy from others and they obviously enjoy meeting strangers. But- I also know that many people in the public eye- especially musicians and writers it seems, get recharged from being away from people & they may feel awkward and uncomfortable if "being the celebrity" is their primary function for the day, sometimes that comes off as being less than gracious.

For example I have met people who can turn it on and off-they can be very charming and friendly when recognized in public but if they aren't "on" you might not even recognize them because they aren't putting out that energy.

All the members of Pearl Jam give of themselves not just to their fans and to their music, but to many projects and causes in the community & not just their money- but their time. I think that is really admirable & I applaud all of them.

Yeah Mike was very approachable at the FTM show. Even at like 2 in the morning when he was leaving the Showbox he stopped and was signing everything people handed him.

I've had the PLEASURE, IN CAPS, of meeting and talking with Mike half a dozen times . He was every bit as gracious and down to earth each and every time as he is in IIC . Whether it was hanging out by the load in ramp in Reading, outside the Showbox before FTM...twice, Brisbane on the past tour, coming off stage after soundchecking with the Stones in Pitsburgh 05 , or Camden 98 , he was never in a rush, signed everything, and occasionally seemed bemused by all fuss people made ;as if he was just doing what a guy in his position should do. THANKS MIKE !!!
