THE BAND

How come these guys haven't quite stood the test of time like other bands? A lot of adults still love The Band, but their music hasn't caught on with younger generations in the same way as Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Who, etc. Even Bob Dylan and Neil have caught on a bit, but from what I've seen The Band is virtually unknown to the population under 25.
Luckily The Last Waltz has kept them somewhat more relevant, but their career extends much further than an epic final concert and film. The Brown Album is one of the greatest records of all time and their work with Bob is unbelievable too- the live album Before The Flood is fucking mind-blowing. All music (in my opinion), but especially the Band, must be listened to on vinyl. You really have to hear everything that's going on as clear as possible...basslines, backing vocals, keys, etc.
Their decline in popularity might have something to do with not having a traditional frontman/songwriter.... A single glorified face and to represent the band seems necessary for super stardom these days. But they have one of the most interesting dynamics and each contribute to The Band's sound....Robbie's songwriting and harmonic-happy leads, Rick's kickass basslines, Richard's severely underrated vocals, Garth's "music teaching" as Robbie says, and of course Levon on drums and vocals- and probably my favorite member of The Band.

Anyway, any other PJ and Band fans?

As I have read, they were all so pissed at him, they can't even watch "The Last Waltz"..
He and Martin Scorseze act like the own the entire narrative .. and as Levon tells it, all the while Robbie is singing into a dead microphone and pretending to be the band's conductor...
when NONE of them were barely even speaking to him by that last performance..

a dream come true for me would be for some quality footage from that 74 tour to surface

Agreed. That full force sound is crazy with Dylan's songs. What a wave they create on songs like Most Likely You'll Go Your Way and It Ain't Me Babe.
I listen to The Band on the regular. Usually just the greatest hits. Ophelia is on just about every mix I make.
when ev and mmj did "it makes no difference" my mind blew wide open
that was a great tour
better than The Band's version.
yes this is one of my single favorite PJ related covers. Eddie absolutely nails it
i LOVE covers when they are done like the way EV and MMJ did that song. they totally NAILED it indeed...to the point where i'm almost on side with hatfield78 in saying that they did it better than the original
thing with me is rick danko was often overshadowed in that band due to robbie and levon being SOOO great...certainly rick is/was under appreciated, imo. heck come to think of it the amazing thing about the band was everyone in that band was a++ in their own right. garth hudson WOW. richard manuel WOW. ALL INCREDIBLE MUSICIANS
also MMJ & EV doing a quick one on the Immagine in Cornice dvd is incredible, but that's totally off topic
in my world robbie robertson will never overshadow rick danko. as for levon helm... he is quite simply my favourite drummer and one of my fave singers.
there is no band that gets close THE BAND. imo they are the quintessential american band.
take a good look
this could be the day
hold my hand
lie beside me
i just need to say
We have an affinity for The Band here and are very lucky to have had them around for so long.
