Boys are featured in this issue of Kerrang, Eddie is on the front cover. I walked out of the shop with a big smile on my face as I'm always checking out magazines on the shelves for articles on PJ, and they're so few and far between. Hate the tag "Grunge God", it sucks big time, it's time the journos got over that ridiculous tag, but apart from that a good article on the boys - 5 pages on them including colour photographs, go buy everyone, especially in Australia. Dont know if it's already hit the US shelves yet, it's a British magazine. Keep turning the pages after you've read the article on the boys and there's 2 further pages on "Grunge Masterclass", including Top Ten "Grunge" anthems and a grunge timeline with a tiny pic of Andy Wood.

Why does the word 'grunge' bother people so much? It's just a word to describe a certain era or musical movement, that's why journalists use it. I don't see it as any being any different than using terms like 'Punk', 'Soul', 'Metal' etc.

Well it's not so much that I object to them being tagged grunge, but that was a long time ago and they're not really grunge anymore. It's the term "Gods" I hate. I know the guys are anti that sort of hype, they never wanted to be seen as rock Gods like many of the hair bands of the 80s were. Just a silly, puerile term if you ask me calling them "grunge Gods". Anyone with a bit of imagination would come up with something better if you have to label them.

I don't know - maybe I don't understand what Grunge is, but I thought Nirvana & AIC were more like grunge bands and PJ & Soundgarden were more diverse rock & roll bands. Calling PJ a grunge band is an excuse for older people to dislike them.

Would someone please define "grunge" for me. I mean in musical terms. Writing style/theory.

I've never understood classifying PJ and Soundgarden or Nirvana or AIC or Screaming Trees or anyone else in the same category except Rock. And that's just because of each band's choice of instrumentation, lineup, and arrangements (popular, blues based like nearly all rock bands). I'm fully aware of the stylistic difference demonstration in the documentary "Hype." But using that definition, I find it applies to no one other than some early Mudhoney. Certainly not PJ at any point in their catalogue.

The only reason I can see for grouping all of these bands together is because they share a common geographic origin. Not because they sound remotely alike in things like: production, vocal style, lyrical style or content, lead guitar style, percussion/rhythm style, etc...

It seems (to me) quite obvious that the term "grunge" is a marketing term used to conjure an image in the minds of consumers rather than to summarize the musical content of a few bands' catalogues.

Also, I feel the need to offer that there is a difference between flannel and plaid. I have yet to read of a journalist getting that correct.

So, again... Would someone please define "grunge" for me. I mean in musical terms. Writing style/theory.

Just my Kerrang mag, thanks for letting us know.
I used to get Kerrang in the early 90's, only if PJ were in it.

The term 'Grunge' refers to early 90's alt-rock bands mostly from Seattle but also including a few outsiders like Smashing Punmpkins, STP, Afghan Whigs etc. It's just a way of defining the scene they came from, in the same way people might describe the Sex Pistols as being from the punk scene, or Blur as Brit-pop. The reason I think people find it offensive, is because ultimately the 90's hasn't necessarily remained as relevant as people would have hoped it would. Personally I couldn't care less, Pearl Jam are pretty much the last band standing, well along with the new AIC, and they still make music that is relevant to me.

I also don't care if they get referred to as 'gods'. Hell, they've been going for nearly twenty years, and they have an incredible back catalogue, up there with even the greatest bands, in my opinion, so definitely deserve the praise, even if they would be a little bashful about that title.
