I used to have a few gerbils as pets years ago, and really took a liking to them.

I now have this desire to go and buy a hamster.

Anyone have any as pets?

I think that hamsters are the worst choice of small pet (among hamsters, gerbils, rats, and mice.) They are cranky, and prone to biting. I had about four hamsters when I was a child, but have never gotten another one in over 20 years.

I highly recommend mice. They tend to be people-oriented. Gerbils like getting food from people, or being taken out of their cage for exercise, but they mostly bond with other gerbils. Hamsters would rather be left alone. The few rats I kept in the early 90s weren't very tame, so I can't give an opinion.

Mice are tiny, curious, and insanely cute! I've had about 37 mice since the age of 7. Each one has a distinct personality. I have 3 females in one cage: Giant Annoushka mothers the others with frequent grooming. Despite being obese, she has boundless energy. She is so happy that she jumps for joy when she walks. Tiny Lola has a neurotic condition called "waltzing." She runs in counter-clockwise ovals. She's the only one who jumps right into my hand without hesitation. If I'm wearing long sleeves, she climbs the fabric. Nova tends to get annoyed by Lola's behaviour sometimes, but luckily she has not turned into a bully. They play in the dry bathtub for an hour every night. I put down some newspaper, and make a playground out of boxes, tubes, blocks, etc. The mice are thrilled to be there, and they burn off their crazy energy.
I have a male mouse who lives separately. I adopted him from the Humane Society in August. What a sweetheart!

Mice take up almost no room. Their day-to-day expenses cost almost nothing. My current four cost a whopping TWO DOLLARS to feed each month! That's 50 cents each. I feed them a selection of organic grains from the bulk bins at Whole Foods Market, plus a little hay, veggies, and crumbs of my food. I gave up on wood shavings, so I cut up scrap paper for bedding. It's free! You can keep housing costs low by asking for free or cheap cages on Craigslist.

The only large expense I've had just occurred on Tuesday: A $91.39 vet bill. For years, the rational side of me has been arguing that a trip to the vet should be for euthanasia only. But my emotions won't let me kill a sweet pet that might recover. Two of the mice have a lung infection. It's not an illness with a high cure rate, so I was hoping to find a naturopath who could offer alternatives to antibiotics. Unfortuantely, 'Nushy' got worse so quickly that I didn't have time to learn anything new, or find another way. I took them to a conventional vet nearby who has a good reputation with exotics.

    I've got a dwarf hamster,

You lot are meanies for suggesting it's sexual! ;):D It isn't for me, but hey ho it takes all kinds.

Until a few weeks ago had two, but one escaped and hasn't been seen since. I have heard scratching in the wall, so hopefully it's still alive. At one point we accidently had about 18, I say accidently, according to a vet we supposedly had 4 boys, to our surprise 3 of them gave birth to umpteen babies. Quite a lot didn't make it, it was quite disturbing with some of them, I'd come down in the morning and find them being eaten by their siblings. Two I accidently killed, I was adjusting the cage and squished one under the wheel, the other one, I gave it a bath (there was a legitimate reason for this), turned my back for two minutes and the poor little thing had drowned in about a centimeter of water. I was very sad.

I love having hamsters, and they are great fun as pets, although they do sleep the majority of the day and run around most of the night, but as long as they aren't in the room you sleep in you should be ok.

Hamsters (and mice) are just so fun and sweet. Russian/chinese dwarf ones are hilarious. Like all animals they each have their own character. We had several (as several mice) and each one was different. We had Silver who was a lazy bugger but was very sweet and loved cuddles. Brains who was a bit dim but used to run like a madman up and around the cage (we have a modular one). Miffy who was a real escape artist. Somehow or the other she was able to get out of her cage, run around, pick up a few odds and sods to bring back to her cage and pretend nothing ever happened. Though they are nocturnal animals, you can play with them during the day too. After the last one died, we got mice (three of them together). We currently have one mouse (one rescued from work!) and he loves hanging from the 'roof' of his dining room.

I had a couple as a kid. it was the only pet we were allowed to have outside of fish. They are pretty freaking boring pets, and you really do have to clean them a lot or they smell terrible. They're cute though.

In college they used to serve us these little stuffed chicken things that were the same color, size, and shape as a hamster. Everyone called them hamsters.

I had two as a kid. I remember thinking they liked jumping on the bed with me. looking back...I doubt they liked it very much.

careful if you get more than one. they're horny lil fuckers...and they eat their young. I was slightly traumatized by seeing a little group of baby hamsters one morning ...and the mom with a foot hanging out of her mouth.

We've had some in the past. Three or four. They die too often and they aren't very friendly sometimes (they bite!)

We prefer the larger rodents as pets because you can hold them, they try to communicate with peeping/squeaking/etc., and they live longer too!

We have guinea pigs and a chinchilla now. The chinchilla is the most darling pet you can imagine. He's been our little sweetie for about 9 years now. I'm going to be heart-broken when he finally dies. :|

It was an 80's action/period piece in the vein of Conan the Barbarian....the main character had some kind of psychic power over animals, and travelled with two super cute ferrets who save the day...I think they made a tv series out of it too....

Yeah, low budget but really good story once you get past the cheap special effects and dumb stuff (like why did bother dyeing the tiger's coat?). But those ferrets were really cute. The hero could talk to animals and they would obey him.

    Never saw the TV show.

Hamsters are quite possibly the biggest waste of flesh and fur. Get a snake or something, they'll give you just as much affection (none) and are significantly easier to take care of.
