I'm happy to say that I've met both of my goals. Raised $5000+ for breast cancer research, and reached the summit of Mount Rainier.
Standing on top of Washington State.
Thank you to all that supported me! The PJ community really helped me reach both of my goals. Special thanks to Mike McCready and Chris Adams for donating their time and goods!
And you have to think that most cancer's are related....once you cure one, you're on the way to curing others.
Hey sennin,
I actually work in cancer research and I do want to throw out a couple of points...
Breast cancer funding leads every other type by a LOT. While the numbers may not be as high, there are far more aggressive and less-survivable types of cancer out there that receive approx 1/1000 of what breast cancer research funding gets.
Certainly, people have gotten the word out and show support for that research, but the fact is...other types of cancer research are under-funded because of it. Many cancer charities by default allocate x-percentage to breast cancer research if the donor does not specify. That percentage usually is anywhere from 80-100%.
The other point...
Sadly, most types of cancer are very un-related. I work on a number of different cancer types (currently: glioblastoma/brain, non-small cell lung, ovarian and bladder) and outside of a couple common biochemical pathways (which are targeted by current and upcoming drugs), they diseases couldn't be more dis-similar.
Almost every type requires a completely different approach.
Anyways...
I think what you are doing is great! People need to get out there and support research for breast and all types of cancer.
Nice job raising that money sennin! There needs to be more people like you!

Now only if other types of cancer could get the support and funding that breast cancer gets...
There's only one way to do that.....to do it. There are plenty of other charity events that support all types of cancer.
