Pearl Jam and Geography Class

Hey all,

So I am currently in a geography college class. (Gen. Ed. requirement, not my choice lol) And we have to do a 5 Country Travel Project. The assignment is for me to dream about and plan a 3 week trip for yourself. The trip needs a theme, and obviously I'm going to choose Pearl Jam. :D

I need to plan a trip that covers at least 5 different countries that revolves around the central theme of Pearl Jam. The places that I visit need to be specific and real places. I need to explain the relevance of each place to the topic. I asked the professor and she won't allow me to just see 5 different concerts in 5 different countries. :(

What I need help on is: What are places around the world that I can visit that are relevant to Pearl Jam? They can be fan sites, museums, guitar manufactures, anything! I need to somehow relate them to Pearl Jam. Any help is greatly appreciated cause I am drawing a blank.

Rock and roll hall of fame in Cleveland?
Tenclub llc, Seattle?

Thanks!

Seattle would probably be a good place to start, and you could end in Auckland, where Mr Snuggleton was born

    I think a trip to the State of Western Australia, Australia is necessary here. Maybe for two reasons;

    1. Eddie's involvement with the campaign against the development of the land at Ningaloo Reef.

    http://www.save-ningaloo.org/

    2. Mike's trip to visit Bon Scott's (Rock in peace) memorial grave at Fremantle Cemetry in WA to honour one of the greatest Rock'n'Roll frontmen the World has ever been blessed by. AC/DC, in particular Angus Young had a large influence on Mike's playing and love for guitar so I guess that ties in with Pearl Jam. Not sure if the other guys went as well but I know Mike did.

I would also agree with Western Australia. Here is a quote from "Perth Now" over here in OZ just after their first show:

"Throughout the show Vedder spoke of his experiences in WA. He related the story of how, when the band played Perth in 2003, they met a "7-foot tall man". That man told the band of the campaign to save Ningaloo Reef and asked if they would speak up for it. Vedder expressed the band's joy at hearing that this time round the conservations won, before dedicating The Fixer to the 7-foot man - "our good friend Mr Luc Longley"."

Here is the link to the full article:

Seattle is an obvious one. :)

    Who is Mr Snuggleton?
  • West aus is defs a choice

Ed also loves to surf here as well :D
makes much more sense to live in the present tense
  • Pretty important moment in the history of the band, even if it was tragic:
    Roskilde, Denmark

    Thank you everyone!

Seattle is the obvious starting point.
Western Australia is good, and I think I might be able to make it work.
Roskilde Denmark is one I didnt think of.

    BUMP!

    2 more?

  • Hmmm...I don't know how well this would work, but could you possibly include Kosovo in there? Being that Last Kiss was included on the No Boundaries compilation for Kosovo relief and the song was the most popular (according to lame ass charts and mainstream radiostations) of the band??? Just a thought...
    I miss you alreddie.

Japan or South America for the wrap up.

Or an East Coast city for the second spot, before Europe. MSG? Philly? Boston?

I can't do 2 stops in one country, and if I do Seattle, I can't do an east coast stop. :(

  • not sure if these would be valid enough explanations but what about countries that have greatly influenced the lyrics of many songs...Iraq due to his strong opposition to the war; or I'm sure Ed and guys take a surfing trip every once in while...NZ, Costa? Since the ocean has such strong themes throughout their songs. Just a though. good luck! post the paper when you're done so we can take a read:)

I forget which country it is in, but in South America the boys bought up a bunch of untouched rainforest to preserve it from being used for logging as part of offsetting their '03 tour carbon emissions. that could be something i guess...

    Awesome project!

All I did in college was play with chemicals :( Sometimes they would explode on me. Yep, I was the one pulling on the handle bar of the rusted looking shower head in the corner of the lab ;)

Please post, should be a fun read.
  • i would say berlin....especially eddie is a big fan of the ramones and berlin has the first (and i think only) ramones museum in the world.

    http://www.ramonesmuseum.com/

and it has a very significant place in european history, that is why they played "rocking in a free world" at the last show. they come here on almost every tour. so i guess they like the city.

    good luck with your paper!!!

i was thinking this too, except i would do pakistan from when ed worked with nusrat fateh ali khan for the dead man walking soundtrack, and i'm sure a few songs from no code were influenced from the eastern sound.
My favorite Pearl Jam song: "Corporate Greed Boat Asshole Behind a Counter in the Oval Office"
  • Since you're already downunder writing about Australia, take a trip across the Tasman and cover New Zealand too. Neil Finn hails from Te Awamutu, a small town a few hours south of Auckland. I don't know how deep your PJ knowledge is, so I apologize if I'm telling you stuff you already know, but Neil was one of the frontmen for a band called Split Enz in the late 70s/early 80s, and later the singer for Crowded House. Ed has said often that Split Enz was a major influence on him growing up, and PJ has covered some Enz dongs before ("I Got You" and "History Never Repeats" for starters, and "Stuff And Nonsense" is an occasional "Daughter" tag). Ed's also shown up onstage singing with Neil and/or Crowded House a number of times, both in NZ and America (check out Neil's '7 Worlds Collide' DVD or CD sometime - Neil put together an all-star band for a week's worth of shows in Auckland, singing Split Enz, Crowded House, solo stuff, and their own stuff - the band included Ed, Johnny Marr from the Smiths, and Ed O'Brien and Phil Selway from Radiohead... Ed sings three Split Enz songs ("Take A Walk," "History Never Repeats," and "I See Red"), "Parting Ways," and shows up on at least one other playing the ukulele), and Neil's son Liam was Ed's opening act on his solo tour this summer. Ed's spent a bit of time surfing and traveling around New Zealand, so he knows the country well. So, at least from a musical perspective, he has close ties to NZ - and (though this may be a stretch as I've never seen any comment that this line is a nod in Split Enz's direction) may have used one of their lyrical themes in a PJ song:

Once divided, nothing left to subract - "Nothingman" (1994)
How can I figure this equation when multiplication's the rule? You keep subtracting me from you, and it just doesn't add up at all. Another great divide, another great divide... - "Another Great Divide" (1976)

So, the link may be tenuous at best, but one of his biggest musical influences is from New Zealand, and he's spent a bit of time there over the years.

But even if you don't use NZ in your paper, you still need to go and get the DVD... consider this tip a Christmas present to everyone reading this board who hasn't already seen/heard the DVD lol
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.
