Going All the Way' for World AIDS Day
A catchy little pop song called "Going all the way' will be released on Dec. 1 to mark World AIDS Day.
You'll be able to find it for download on iTunes during the month of December (the link goes live Dec. 1).
A portion of all proceeds will go to an international HIV/AIDS charity called AVERT.
The song comes from the Sdia music project. That's AIDS spelled backwards.
AVERT works in areas of the world most severely affected by HIV/AIDS, including Africa and India. The group's overseas programs aim to provide education, support and care to those suffering from the disease.
"Going all the way," by virtue of its title, "aims to expose the relation of how quickly a song can spread across the world and also how easily HIV/AIDS can spread without proper awareness and education," AVERT officials say.
The song was written, produced and composed by Ran Shem Tov, from the band Izabo. The singer is Roni Alter.
World AIDS Day, first celebrated in 1988, aims to raise money and awareness in the global battle against AIDS. This year's theme is "Universal Access and Human Rights."
And in case you think AIDS is another country's problem, consider this: "Of all the industrialized countries in the world, America is home to the largest number of people living with HIV," according to AVERT.
"Tens of thousands of people are newly infected with HIV in America every year."
Groups like AVERT can make a difference. A 2008 report from the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS noted significant gains in preventing new HIV infections in a number of heavily affected countries due to changes in sexual behavior through "the combined will and efforts of governments, donors, civil society and affected communities."
