I've never really understood live albums

Even though (thoughts arrive like...) I have a few myself. I've always thought that studio albums were better.

That all changed this morning.

Last night after a much anticipated wait, my bootleg CD arrived - O2, 18th August 2009.

Put it on in the car this morning on the way to work, and "BAM" I was transported back to my seat on the night within seconds. My eyes started to well up as I sang along to Release. Then the onslaught continued as we jump straight into Animal. Brilliant.

Fantastic sound quality. I really was there again.

I actually had tears in my eyes - making driving a little tricky (luckily I was sat in traffic and not tearing down the country lanes).

I am now a convert. I get it.

Fantastic job guys, just fantastic - PJ, 10C and that company that recorded it (begins with a "K", but the name escapes me). Thank you.

I felt like that about Manchester, felt like I was there all over again. :D
  • A good boot of a good show (you've been to) is consciousness time travel at its finest. 8-) It's superior than a DVD with artificial edits and angles. The only thing better would be to wear a helmet cam during the show, with a binaural mic setup, then review the tape afterward.

Kufala is the live CD distribution company, by the way.

  • the live albums that mean the most to me are those I have attended.

But then you get gems like Live at Benaroya Hall that change everything.
  • I love live albums, I think you can always tell how good a band are by their live performances.

And I agree that the boots take you back into your seat at the concert. Had the Manchester boot just over a week now and not taken it off the stereo, I feel like I am back in the room with the band. Good times.

I also can hear myself singing along on the CD, or am I hearing things? :D

Not really, no. Maybe understood's the wrong word. "Appreciated" may be better.

First Live album I fell in love with was the Bruce 75- 85 set. There are lots of bad live albums, but if done well- they can be crackers. Love my PJ boots and they do take you right back to the night if you attended the gig.

Can I assume that you've never heard The Ramones 'It's Alive'? It's one of the greatest albums out there.

i only buy bootlegs of shows i've been to with the exception of the gorge boxset and maybe half a dozen other random shows.

my favorite are the MSG shows. I was at 9-11-98 and both shows in 2003 and they are all incredible and as stated above, they are a time warp to the feeling and memories of the days of anticipation before the show and the actual show. whats funny about the 9-11-98 show aka as the breath show, if you really listen to breath, its probably the worst version of the song ever since it was so out of practice!

Neither do I. I have every one of their albums on vinyl though, along with every album on digital download for my i-pod. 8-)

Be sure to check out 'It's Alive'. It's a classic.

Edit: On second thoughts, I do have 'Pleasant Dreams' on c.d back in England.

Cheers dude - will do. There are so many albums I need to check out, just not enough time, money or space to do them all.

I totally get what you mean! I was the same way until about 2 months ago or so-- now I have a bunch of live stuff that kicks ass! Especially for me, who has never seen PJ live, besides DVDs & Youtube, this gives me an awesome preview of what's in store when I finally see PJ!

Some songs take on a whole new feel once they're played live, which is awesome as well!

    I'm addicted to boots now!

I understood the importance of live albums the first time I heard Babylon By Bus....Bob Marley and Exit Stage Left....by RUSH way back when. After those albums I've been hooked on live albums.

I love LIVE albums. I can feel the mood and energy of the band and crowd. Studio albums are too "pretty". They feel sterilized.

I saw Neil Young at The Filmore West in 1972. It was just called "The Filmore" back then 'cuz it was the only one. It was good until he walked off stage and refused to come back. What happened was that the venue put guards and cops along the front of the stage on the floor area. Neil said, "I can't perform like this, I feel like I'm in jail", and walked off and never returned. I lived on Filmore and California Street in San Fran that year and was 17.
It was great! He had Graham Nash appear as a surprise walk on. I was already a huge fan, but that night upped the ante. Even though he walked out, no one got mad at him and no one had anything negative to say. He had put on a great show up 'til then.

    Ah yes, memories.

I was at State College too, and I have that boot and the Buffalo one - both are excellent.

Love live albums. I guess my first was a Springsteen bootleg on vinyl no less, from about 1980. I rarely listen to Pearl Jam studio albums anymore - its almost always the live recordings.
