or your local Guitar center are good places to start.

I don't think you need to worry about vibrations unless you live in a steel mill. Really it is more for the club setting and mega bass. A standard player should be fine, mine has never skipped from the music being so loud it rattled the turntable.

project makes some good simple high end stuff, but everyone seems to swear by techniques. I have a project and love it. Only bad thing is playing 45's you need to lift the plate and manually switch the belt (not hard just a pain)

just make sure you have a phono in on your amp or you'll need to buy a pre-amp separate.

Also the stylus (needle) makes a world of difference.

Also invest into some groove glide for your LP's

    good luck!
  • Rega has also really nice turntables.

    P1, P2 , P3 etc.

There is also the P3-24 which is a beauty.

Go to any place that is close by that fixes old stereo equipment, they should have one, a lot of times they may have one that doesn't work, tell them you will buy it and pay for them to fix it also if that's the case.

  • The Pro-ject Debut III is an excellent turntable for the money...
  • Just wondering what the consensus is on the USB turntables? A friend suggested I get one of those, hook it to my laptop, then run an HDMI from the laptop to my receiver. I have some really great JBL speakers, but I don't have a receiver/amp with a phono jack. I'm not opposed to eventually getting one, but I don't have a massive vinyl collection (pretty much Backspacer, fan club singles, and an old Elton John LP), so I cannot justify it right now.

I'm in the same boat (minus the Elton John album... ;) ) and was looking at getting a USB turntable. I did track down some Godspeed You! Black Emperor albums on vinyl too, and would love to play them.

Christmas came early today: The limited edition (numbered out of 3,000) vinyl box set of Neil Young's first four albums remastered landed on my doorstep.

Incredible. They sound amazing. Worth the bank if they're still available.

    Sounds phenomenal, doesn't it?

And yes, don't get a motorized (direct drive) turntable at home. The extra noise will negate much of the sound benefits. A good needle is also important. You can spend anywhere between $20 to $16,000 on a needle. $100 should do it.
