My friend and I are making the trip up from the Philly area for the Winter Classic, and we need someplace awesome in which to spend New Year's Eve. We're both girls, in our mid-20s...so someplace that skews youngish, preferably not with a frat part vibe, not too expensive or stuffy. It's the first time in Boston for both of us so we have literally no idea where to go. Any ideas?

Thanks :D

Everyone has a different level of "not too expensive" (not sure what your range is) ... but, my experience is that there is no such thing as a New Year's Eve in the city of Boston that is both nice and inexpensive.

Every bar in the city will have an event and almost all of them oversell and it sucks. Do not go to a bar. This I know from experience ... several times I was talked into this, and every time, it was a disaster.

Here's what I did once, and perhaps the route could go ... not sure where in Boston may have something like this.

I was in DC a few years ago for work and my girl came out to visit ... we did a little research and we found a small restaurant/B&B/hotel that had a fixed menu and dancing afterwards with a live band (we weren't staying there, we just went to the event for the evening) ... it was a pretty tiny place and it was only about 50 people there at its max capacity. That said, we still paid $100 a head, that only covered dinner and champaign toast, drinks were separate ... which, is what I'm guessing you'll find.

I'm waiting for some low life dude from Boston to suggest their place. Two girls in their mid twenties, a Philly dude would have been the first post with such a rude suggestion. Wow Boston really is classier!

Yeah every bar in Philly is essentially like that too...the lame package deals that totally rip you off. We're just hoping to have a good time in a place not filled with couples and/or 21 year olds. As for the nice vs. inexpensive thing, we typically hang out in dive bars with good beers on tap. So I'm not talking NICE nice, just not creepy or whatever. This might be a lost cause

There is a bar in Fanueil Hall called Sissy K's and if you like Bud, Bud Light or Bud Select they are $1 drafts all day everyday. But my guess is they will be tapped out on New Years causing you to buy the $4 bottle. But this truly is the best deal in town. If you are driving up, it wouldn't kill you to stay a few miles outside Boston in Somerville or Quincy. Might save a few $$ and it is 10 min away.

Don't go to the Faneuil Hall bars, especially on New Years. I really don't know any good places for new years, as I usually don't go to the type of place you're describing, but I can tell you just not to go to fanueil hall. Fanueil Hall is just a tourist area and where all the townies from the north shore who live with their parents go because there are a lot of parking garages. the bars are cheesy and filled with underage girls and sketchy guys, bad music, etc.

I'm totally not limited to a particular kind of place. All suggestions are welcome, 'cause right now I've got nothing. :)

Well Lauri, please inform our guest where there ISN'T a bar in Boston with cheesy music, underage girls, and guys who think they are players. My guess is you can't name one unless it is in the Back bay where there are $20 cover charges and $9 beers.
